Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

FORT MILL, S.C. -- After stringing together their longest winning streak of the season, the Pawtucket Red Sox lost for the second straight night, falling by a 6-1 final to the Charlotte Knights on Monday.

Pawtucket opened its swing into the International League South Division with six straight victories, before dropping the last two contests on the eight-day trip. In the finale at Charlotte, the PawSox were beaten by a right-hander, Zach Stewart, who was instrumental in their 2012 Governor's Cup championship.

Stewart went 3-5 with a 3.27 ERA in 11 starts for Pawtucket last regular season, before winning his two outings in the postseason. The latter was a 2-0 decision over Charlotte in the middle contest of last September's three-game championship series sweep.

He fell behind by the fifth batter of the night, after a single by Jose Iglesias and walk of Mark Hamilton. Bryce Brentz followed with an RBI single, giving the Sox a first-inning lead for the third time in the series. But for the second straight night, the Knights erased the early deficit.

Making an injury rehabilitation start, while recovering from a left pectoral strain for Boston, Franklin Morales retired the first four Charlotte batters. The fifth, Josh Phegley, connected off a 3-2 pitch for his eighth home run to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning.

Morales recovered to record a scoreless third and finished with a 48-pitch outing. He was relieved by Terry Doyle to begin the last of the fourth.

Doyle (L, 3-3) wound up facing 10 Knights' hitters, surrendering five earned runs on five hits, a walk and a hit batsman. Phegley broke the 1-1 tie with an RBI double, before Seth Loman doubled in two more runs for a 4-1 lead.

Charlotte scored twice more on a sacrifice fly by Steve Tolleson and an RBI single by Jim Gallagher.

Meanwhile, Stewart (W, 2-4) was in the midst of retiring 10 consecutive PawSox into his seventh and final inning of work. He finished with seven strikeouts, two walks and five hits allowed.

Relievers Daniel Moskos and Jeff Gray each pitched a scoreless inning to help the Knights salvage a split of the four-day series.
