Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

(Charlotte, NC) - For the second straight night, the Pawtucket Red Sox tallied 15 hits at BB&T Ballpark. Chris Marrero's four hits guided the team to an 8-4 victory over the Charlotte Knights on Tuesday night. Marrero came just shy of recording Pawtucket's second cycle in two games (after Henry Ramos claimed the club's first cycle in over 17 years last night). The International League All-Star, who will return to Charlotte next week to participate in the Triple-A Home Run Derby, fell a home run shy of a cycle. Marrero, who additionally had homered in each of his previous two games, went 4-for-5 with three runs scored. He is 7-for-10 with two doubles, a triple, a home run and five runs scored in two games this series. Both Brennan Boesch and Ryan Court picked up three RBI in the victory. Boesch went 3-for-5 in his third Triple-A game of the season. Marrero slid into third base with a leadoff triple in the second inning and scored on Boesch's groundout. The PawSox (45-41) quickly expanded their 1-0 lead to 5-0 against Knights starter Chris Volstad (5-7) in the third inning. Jose Vinicio led off the frame by smoking his first Triple-A home run over the right field fence. The next batter, Mike Miller, doubled and Jantzen Witte followed with a single. The sequence continued with Henry Ramos' sacrifice fly, his 20th RBI in his last 13 games started. Chris Marrero then doubled to place two runners in scoring position before Ryan Court completed the rally with a two-run single into center field. Pawtucket put up two more runs against Volstad in the fifth inning on Brennan Boesch's opposite-field blast over the left field fence, his first home run for the PawSox. Pawtucket tagged Charlotte's starter for seven runs for the second straight night. The PawSox additionally tallied 12 hits against Volstad after recording 13 knocks against starter Jacob Turner on Monday. Pawtucket starter William Cuevas (5-3) surrendered four runs on nine hits in six innings to earn his first win since May 7. Cuevas stranded the bases loaded in the first and retired all six batters in the next two innings. In the fourth inning, Jerry Sands' double and Danny Muno's RBI single slimmed the Knights' deficit to 5-1. Charlotte (39-48) would load the bases with one out, but a diving catch by Boesch in right field helped Cuevas escape further trouble. Trailing, 7-1, entering the bottom of the fifth, the Knights rallied for three runs to cut the PawSox lead in half. A single, hit batter, walk, sacrifice fly, wild pitch, double and an RBI groundout did the damage (in that order). An insurance run in the ninth and three innings of stellar relief work closed out the win for Pawtucket. Robby Scott set down all six batters in the seventh and eighth innings, while Chandler Shepherd tossed a scoreless ninth. The PawSox improved to 10-4 against the IL South this season. Pawtucket has won three contests in a row and seven of its last eight road games. The PawSox finish their three-game series in Charlotte tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Pawtucket lefthander Henry Owens (5-5, 3.86) is scheduled make the start against Charlotte righty Kameron Loe (0-0, 3.86).
