Regina Pats News Release

Cranbrook, British Columbia - The Regina Pats (17-18-3-3) got the wheels rolling on a six game road trip against the Kootenay Ice (8-31-3-0). The Ice pounced for four goals in the third, sending the Pats to a 5-3 loss.

The goaltenders got plenty of work to start the Pats and Ice second meeting of the year. Jordan Hollett and Wyatt Hoflin both faced 16 shots in the period in a wide open frame. Adam Brooks had a pair of great chances for the Pats, but found the post instead of net. Hoflin came up with a big stop on a Lane Zablocki one-timer in the slot to keep the game scoreless. Kootenay broke through with 2:50 left in the frame. A tipped shot from the slot came loose in the Pats crease long enough for Noah Philp to dig it into the net. Hollett kept the game to a 1-0 spread when he came up with a great pad stop on a Jesse Zaharichuk breakaway.

The second period saw the Pats take over the flow of play. The Pats generated 18 shots in the period, keeping Hoflin plenty busy. Meanwhile they closed things up in their own end, only allowing five shots in the frame. The Pats powerplay picked up the pressure midway through, but couldn't cash in. Lane Zablocki had the best opportunity, but couldn't bury on a back door one-timer. The Pats finally broke through on their 28th shot of the game. Connor Hobbs guided himself to the middle of the ice before picking the top corner to tie the game 1-1 through forty mintues.

Kootenay bounced back in the third period and struck 3:27 in to re-take the lead. Matt Alfaro got away from his man through the neutral zone and Zak Zborosky sent the Ice forward in alone. Alfaro went to the backhand, lifting a shot over the glove of Jordan Hollett. Just 33 seconds later Tanner Lishchynsky struck to give the Ice a 3-1 lead. Adam Brooks found a response under a minute later as the Pats' leading scorer beat Hoflin with a shot that was in and out of the net in a blink. The Ice restored their two goal advantage when Matt Alfaro snagged the puck out of a scrum and flipped it up over Hollett to give Kootenay the 4-2 advantage 7:25 into the period. That goal ended Hollett's night as Kurtis Chapman took over between the pipes. Things calmed down until the final five minutes when Colton Kroeker cut the lead to one again, sniping on the powerplay. The Ice had an answer for that as well as Austin Wellsby grabbed a rebound and walked around Chapman before slinging the puck into the net for some more insurance. That goal sealed the game as the Pats dropped the 5-3 decision in Cranbrook.
