 Potomac Nationals

P-Nats Take Game One, Lead Suspended Game Two

August 26, 2007 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release

WOODBRIDGE, Va - The Potomac Nationals and Myrtle Beach Pelicans will end their four-game season finale at Pfitzner Stadium one way or another. Up 4-0 and about to begin the top of the second inning in game two of a doubleheader, the rain began to fall for the second straight day at the Pfitz and forced another pseudo-doubleheader on Monday. Sunday's game two will be resumed at 5:35 p.m. with the regularly scheduled game to follow approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the first.

The Nationals nabbed the early lead from the Pelicans and right-hander Deunte Heath as Matt Rogelstad tagged a two-out, two-run double and Marvin Lowrance followed with a two-run homer to center field. Potomac starter Craig Stammen worked a scoreless top of the first with the only blemish on his line coming on a two-out double from Willie Cabrera.

Potomac will give the ball to left-hander Ross Detwiler for the completion of Sunday's game two against Myrtle Beach right-hander Jeff Lyman. The P-Nats' starter for game two is still to be determined as the Pelicans will counter with righty Ryan Drese.

The P-Nats took game one of the twin bill 4-1, but it did not look good early. Jordan Schafer and Michael Fisher hit back-to-back doubles off of Nationals right-hander Shairon Martis to give the Pelicans the early 1-0 lead. Martis would settle down after that, however, surrendering just three more hits the rest of the way en route to a complete-game victory. The 20-year-old collected his 13th win with Potomac, most of any pitcher in the Washington Nationals farm system. He also became the first P-Nat other than recently promoted Justin Jones to notch a complete game.

Martis first got some help from the Myrtle Beach defense, then from the top of the lineup. Potomac got a run in the first inning without ever getting a hit. Ian Desmond hit what appeared to be a routine fly ball to right field for the first out, but homeplate umpire Jason Kaminsky ruled interference on Pelican catcher Jeff Stevens allowing Desmond to reach. The Nationals' leadoff man stole second, then advanced to third on a fly out off of the bat of Justin Maxwell. Mike Daniel followed with a walk putting runners at the corners. Daniel took off for second as Myrtle Beach pitched out. Second baseman Derrick Arnold threw wildly to third after charging in to make the catch and Desmond scored easily to tie the game.

Maxwell put Potomac up for good with a one-out, solo home run to right-center field, his tenth as a P-Nat. It was the 24th homer of the season for the 23-year-old, more than any other Washington Nationals' farm hand. Daniel added a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the Nationals' lead to 4-1.

Tickets for Sunday night's game can be exchanged at the Potomac Nationals Box Office for any remaining regular season game. Tickets can be purchased by calling (703)-590-2311 or visiting www.potomacnationals.com.
