P-Bruins Shutout for First Time this Season

November 5, 2017 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Friday night 1-0 in captain Tommy Cross' 300th career game with the team. Dan Vladar made the start in goal as Providence suffered their first shutout of the young season.

Both teams came out of the gate hitting hard with a fight by Sena Acolatse in the opening three minutes. After each squad missed a power play chance, Bridgeport opened the scoring at 9:47. Casey Bailey passed the puck out to Sebastian Aho at the point. He sent a slap-shot towards Vladar that was tipped in front and fluttered in for his second goal of the season. The physicality calmed down after that, but the Sound Tigers took a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Bridgeport had chances to extend their lead in the second, but the P-Bruins stopped three Sound Tiger power plays behind some great athletic saves from Vladar. Providence had their chances too, but Christopher Gibson held strong. Ryan Fitzgerald had their best chance at the left doorstep, but a great pad save from Gibson kept the score 1-0 Bridgeport after two periods.

The P-Bruins had some extra spring in their step in the third as they desperately tried to find the back of the net. They were able to use that desperation to create chances, including a shot that hit nothing but iron from Cross, but Gibson was too strong in goal. Despite pulling Vladar late, Providence was shutout by a 1-0 final.

Vladar stopped 31 of 32 while Gibson stopped all 27 he faced. Providence was 0-4 on the power play and 6-6 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins hit the road for a 7:30pm face-off against the Wolf Pack tomorrow night before returning home for a 3:05pm Sunday tilt against these same Sound Tigers.

The Providence Bruins are the American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Boston Bruins, playing their home games at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, RI. Spanning more than 25 years, the Boston/Providence affiliation is one of the longest and most successful player development partnerships in professional hockey history.
