P-Bruins Defeat Wolf Pack 8-5 in High Scoring Affair

Hartford, CT-- The Providence Bruins defeated the Hartford Wolf Pack 8-5 Friday night at the XL Center. Craig Cunningham scored four times, Matt Fraser chipped in three goals and Alexander Khokhlachev added a goal. Ryan Spooner finished with four assists, while Niklas Svedberg made 18 saves.
Meeting for the first time of the 2013-14 regular season, the P-Bruins and Wolf Pack exchanged goals right from the start. The P-Bruins took the early lead on the power play goal from Cunningham at the 2:16 mark of the opening period, his third goal of the season. Spooner and Carter Camper recorded the assists. Hartford answered with its own power play goal a minute later. Oscar Lindberg tallied his third goal of the season, while Danny Kristo and Aaron Johnson had the assists. Providence broke the tie less than a minute later at the 4:02 mark as Fraser answered right back with his seventh goal of the season. Jared Knight picked up the lone assist. Once again the Wolf Pack answered back to tie the game at two. Darroll Powe scored his second goal of the season at the 6:44 mark. Danny Syvret picked up the lone assist. Providence retook the lead at the 10:13 mark on Fraser's second of the game and eighth of the season. Spooner had the lone assist as the P-Bruins took a 3-2 lead into the first intermission.
The game settled down at the start of the second period, but soon picked up as Cunningham scored back-to-back power play goals at the 7:15 and 8:56 marks. Spooner had the assist on the first goal of the second period, while Fraser and Camper grabbed the goals on the second goal of the period. For Cunningham it was his fourth and fifth goals of the season, giving the P-Bruins a 5-2 lead. The scoring continued as Khokhlachev got a lucky bounce off Syvret's skate and into the net for his second goal of the season. The goal was unassisted. In the final two minutes of the second period, Marek Hrivik got one back for Hartford for his third goal of the season. Arron Asham and Conor Allen recorded the assists as Providence led 6-3 going into the second intermission.
Hartford came out flying at the start of the third period, scoring twice in 14 seconds. A minute into the period Shawn O'Donnell scored his first goal of the season, while Tommy Hughes and Powe picked up the assists. At the 1:14 mark, Ryan Bourque tallied his second goal of the season, unassisted, to cut the P-Bruins lead to one. The offense settled down on both sides, until the 13:51 mark when Cunningham notched his fourth goal of the game and sixth goal of the season off Spooner's fourth assist. Mike Moore had the second assist. Fraser finished off the scoring at the 18:40 mark for his hat trick and ninth goal of the season with an empty net goal. Kevan Miller had the lone assist as the P-Bruins went onto the 8-5 victory.
Svedberg stopped 18 of 23 shots for the P-Bruins, while Jason Missiaen made 16 save and Scott Stajcer made seven saves for the Wolf Pack. Providence finished 3-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Providence travels to Worcester Saturday to take on the Sharks at 7:00pm before returning to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday at 3:05pm against the Wolf Pack.
