February 2, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, in their 17th season in the American Hockey League, announced that right wing Brad Marchand has been named the Reebok Edge/AHL Rookie of the Month for January after recording 16 points, including five goals, a team-high 11 assists and a plus-eight rating in 13 games.
Marchand, 20, kicked off the month with a six-game point-streak, featuring three of his five multiple-point outings in January. The rookie began the month by matching a single-game career-high with three points against the Hershey Bears in Providence's 7-2 win on January 2. Marchand finished the game with a goal and two assists en route to earning second star honors. He later enjoyed two-point games against the Houston Aeros and Manchester Monarchs, and he twice registered two-assist contests versus the Portland Pirates.
In recognition of his achievement, Marchand will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming P-Bruins home game. He will also be awarded the team's MetLife Player of the Month honor for January.
On the season, the right wing ranks fourth in scoring for the P-Bruins with 10 goals and 22 assists for 32 points in 49 games. He is one of only three Providence players to skate in every game this year.
Marchand was a third-round pick by the Boston Bruins, selected 71st overall in the 2006 National Hockey League Entry Draft. Prior to turning pro, the Halifax, Nova Scotia, native played four seasons of junior hockey in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Moncton Wildcats, Val d'Or Foreurs and his hometown Halifax Mooseheads. Marchand is also a two-time gold medal winner for Team Canada in the World Junior Championships.
Other nominees for the Reebok Edge/AHL Rookie of the Month include Albany River Rats center Nick Dodge, Bridgeport Sound Tigers left wing Jesse Joensuu, Chicago Wolves right wing Spencer Machacek, Grand Rapids Griffins center Francis Pare, Hartford Wolf Pack goaltender Matt Zaba, Iowa Chops left wing Matt Beleskey, Lake Erie Monsters center T.J.
