Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 25, 2013) - The Salem Red Sox handed the Dash their third shutout defeat of the season by a score of 7-0 on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark.
After retiring the first two he faced, it looked like Dash starter Chris Beck (6-8) was on his way to a quick first frame. However, things got out of hand quickly for the right-hander. Keury De La Cruz got things started for Salem (2-2, 35-39) with a single, and Stefan Welch followed with a walk. Brandon Jacobs hit an infield single, and an error on the play allowed the Red Sox to score the contest's first run.
The Sox were not done in the opening frame. With Blake Swihart at the plate, Jacobs stole second, and the throw from Kevan Smith went into center field, allowing Welch to score and Jacobs to take third. Matt Gedman then singled, tallying Salem's third and final run of the inning.
The scored stayed the same until the Red Sox added four runs to their lead in the third against reliever Jason Van Skike, who entered the game in the first. The righty retired the first batter that he faced before the next five reached. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for David Renfroe, who blooped a single to right to score a pair. The next man up, Nick Natoli, produced a double to tally another, and Henry Ramos drove in the final run of the contest with a sacrifice fly.
Those seven runs were plenty for Red Sox starter Henry Owens (6-2). Winston-Salem (3-2, 41-34) did not register its first hit of the night until the fourth when Kevan Smith and Jeremy Farrell strung together back-to-back singles. The only other hit surrendered by the southpaw in his seven scoreless frames of work was a double by Courtney Hawkins in the seventh.
Salem turned the final two innings over to reliever Matty Ott, who allowed only one man to reach base. The shutout by Salem is their fourth of the season, and the second time that they have shutout the Dash with Owens on the mound. Winston-Salem paces the CL with nine shutouts in 2013.
Van Skike exited after three and one-third innings of work, turning things over to Terance Marin. Marin turned in a very solid outing, giving up just a pair of hits over three scoreless frames. Cody Winiarski took over the final two frames, striking out three while posting two shutout innings of his own.
Game three of this week's four-game series between the Dash and Red Sox is set for Wednesday at BB&T Ballpark with a special noon start time. Winston-Salem turns to right-hander Jake Cose (1-1, 5.56 ERA), while Salem counters with southpaw Mickey Pena (2-2, 4.84 ERA). Coverage begins on wsdash.com at 11:45 a.m. with the Pregame Dash, and first pitch follows at 12.
