September 6, 2013 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) - Denver Outlaws
DENVER - The Outlaws have acquired attackman John Grant Jr., defenseman Michael Simon and the 16th pick in the 2014 Collegiate Draft from the Bayhawks in exchange for attackman Brendan Mundorf.
"It was an opportunity for us to fill a couple of the needs that we saw this year," Outlaws Head Coach Jim Stagnitta said. "I think that we felt like we got two great players for one great player. We felt like it was a great opportunity for us. We're going to miss Brendan, and he's done so much for us and our program, but we're pleased to add John Grant Jr., who lives in Denver and Mike Simon has a chance to be one of the most dominant defenders in the game moving forward."
Grant Jr. has played in the league since its inaugural season in 2001 and ranks third in MLL history in goals (253), fifth in assists (131) and third in points (403).
He has scored 20 goals in each of the past two seasons with the Bayhawks, totaling 32 points in both campaigns as well. Denver will be the fifth MLL team that Grant Jr. has played for, having spent time with Rochester, Toronto/Hamilton, Long Island and Chesapeake.
Simon is a four-year veteran who played a career best nine games, picking up 16 ground balls and scoring his first career goal in 2013.
Mundorf earned his fourth All-MLL honor and third in a row in 2013 after scoring 23 goals with 18 assists for 18 games despite playing an injury-plagued 11 games. His 18 assists led the team and ranked sixth in the league. He departs as the Outlaws' all-time leader in goals (229), assists (118) and points (347).
"First of all I'd like to say that my time in Denver was very special," Mundorf said in a Bayhawks press release. "I want to thanks the fans and my teammates for a great 8 years there. I am excited about moving to the Bayhawks. I know the franchise well and I have a lot of friends on the team. I am looking forward to playing at home and gearing up for another successful season."
