Otters Overwhelm Petes 7-0

March 12, 2017 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release

Needing every win to secure home ice for the playoffs, the Otters met the Peterborough Petes in Erie looking to stay atop the Western Conference. Erie and Peterborough are the two top teams in their respective conferences, though their leads are tenuous. The Otters stayed ahead of London and Owen Sound by defeating the Petes with a dominant 7-0 performance.

The Otters pressured the Petes early in the contest, and it didn't take long for Erie's high-powered offense to break through: Dylan Strome, circling by the offensive faceoff circle, picked a corner and beat Petes goaltender Dylan Wells cleanly to give the Otters a 1-0 lead. Wells managed to fend off the Otters for much of the period almost singlehandedly, but eventually the Otters scored again: Anthony Cirelli entered Peterborough's zone with speed, set up Kyle Maksimovich on the far side of the zone, and Maksimovich rifled the shot over Wells's shoulder to put the otters up 2-0. Surging with momentum, the Otters scored two more before the period's end: Taylor Raddysh banged in the loose puck out front, and Kyle Pettit redirected Erik Cernak's point-shot less than a minute later. The Otters skated off for the first intermission with a commanding 4-0 lead.

Peterborough locked down defensively throughout the second period, limiting the Otters' scoring chances-though not their shots. In the latter half of the period, Cole Fraser and Dylan Strome exchanged blows in Peterborough's zone; Strome received two minutes for slashing while Fraser received five minutes and a game misconduct for a blindside cross-check. After two minutes of four-on-four play, the Otters scored on the resulting three-minute power play when Ivan Lodnia snapped a shot through Wells. Then, just before the end of the period, Hurricanes prospect Warren Foegele crashed the Petes' net and poked in the rebound, giving the Otters a 6-0 lead heading into the third period.

The Otters retained possession of the puck for most of the third period; the Petes did not manage a shot on goal until past the halfway mark. Wells and the Petes were unable to sustain the barrage for long: Anthony Cirelli hammered home a rebound to make the score 7-0 just before the game ended.

For the Otters, Warren Foegele scored a goal and two assists; Kyle Maksimovich, Kyle Pettit, Taylor Raddysh, Anthony Cirelli, and Dylan Strome all scored a goal and assist each; and Jordan Sambrook and Erik Cernak each notched two assists. Troy Timpano saved all 12 shots he faced in his fourth shutout of the season.

For the Petes, Dylan Wells made 25 saves on 32 shots in the loss.

The Otters host the London Knights in Erie on Tuesday, March 14.
