PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (June 19, 2017) - Travis Ott pitched Charlotte to a 5-0 shutout win Monday as the Stone Crabs earned a split of their doubleheader with the Palm Beach Cardinals at Charlotte Sports Park.
Both teams earned shutout wins, with Palm Beach (39-26) taking the first game 3-0.
In game two, Ott (2-1) allowed only two hits and two walks while striking out seven. Stone Crabs (30-36) relievers Dalton Moats and Reece Karalus each worked a scoreless inning of relief to finish off the shutout.
With the game scoreless in the top of the fourth, Brandon Lowe earned a walk before Dalton Kelly doubled him to third. Two batters later, David Olmedo-Barrera was intentionally walked by Palm Beach starter Derian Gonzalez (3-7) to load the bases. Jim Haley followed by pulling a two-run double down the left field line to give Charlotte a 2-0 lead. Peter Maris then lined a single to right to make the score 3-0. The next batter was Angel Moreno, who doubled to left to extend the Charlotte advantage to 4-0. Gonzalez then bounced a wild pitch, allowing Maris to score and make it 5-0.
In game one, Palm Beach put pressure on Charlotte starter Roel Ramirez (2-2) immediately. Cardinals leadoff hitter Darren Seferina singled before Tommy Edman bunted him to second. Randy Arozarena followed with a double to left which scored Seferina to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. After a Chris Chinea single moved Arozarena to third, Danny Diekroeger flew out to deep center to give Palm Beach a 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals would add another run in the sixth to extend their lead to 3-0.
Cardinals starter Jake Woodford (5-3) spun 6.2 innings of scoreless baseball, striking out three and walking two while allowing only four hits.
The Stone Crabs put two runners on base in the seventh inning but Josh Rapacz grounded out to end the ballgame.
Charlotte outfielder Thomas Milone connected on two of the Stone Crabs' four hits.
