Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

June 14, 2007 - It's hard to believe the season is half over, but the fun has only just begun at Veterans Memorial Stadium as the Kernels head into the All-Star break with three games against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

During this homestand, bring in your old, inactive cellphone (without accessories, chargers, etc.) and donate it to the American Cell Phone Drive. You'll be helping the Cougars Baseball 11-under team and you can receive a discount on tickets for this weekend's games. Look for the table at the main gate before you come into the ballpark.

Friday, June 15th is a big night indeed, as you could drive away with one of three used cars on Pat McGrath ChevyLand Used Car Night. All fans 18 and older receive a ticket when they enter the gates and if your number is drawn, you're a winner! Stop on out before the gates open and say hi to Gregg ‘The Shark' Scharnau from 94.1 KRNA as he does his afternoon show live from Veterans Memorial Stadium. Sign up at the KRNA van for a chance to throw out one of the ceremonial first pitches before the game on 94.1 KRNA Night. It is also Disabled American Veterans Night on Friday and the DAV will pass out a baseball card set featuring former Kernel players to all fans as they come through the gates. The Kernels will also hold a special Flag Day ceremony, presented by the Cedar Rapids Elk's Lodge before the game. And, we welcome fans from Marengo to their annual community night at the ballpark. Gates open at 6 pm with first pitch scheduled for 7 o'clock.

On Saturday morning, the Kernels have teamed up with Metro Care Connection for a youth baseball clinic from 10 to 11:30 am at the stadium for boys and girls ages 5-12. The cost is just $7 per person and you'll have the opportunity to improve your baseball skills and learn from the Kernels players and coaches. You can sign up the day of the event, and proceeds from the clinic benefit the Metro Care Connection.

It's everyone's favorite - FIREWORKS, sponsored by Bank of the West, after the game on Saturday, June 16th. You'll want to get here when the gates open at 6 pm and meet ‘The Brain' and Scott Steele from the ‘Brain & Steel' KHAK morning show, as part of 98.1 KHAK Night at the Ballpark. The Kernels welcome fans from Anamosa to their community night and it will be Hiawatha Kids League night at the ballpark. Game time is 7 pm and make sure to stick around afterwards for Bank of the West post-game FIREWORKS!

Sunday's are always fun days, but this Sunday is extra special as its Father's Day! Bring dad out for a special Father's Day Brunch from 10 am until 1 pm - we've expanded the hours to make sure everyone has time to enjoy the brunch before the game! Tickets for the brunch are $12 for adults and $7 for kids 12-under. Sunday also means a 104.5 KDAT Sunday Family Fun Day - fans can enjoy $1 popcorn all game long, get autographs from the Kernels on the main concourse from 1:20 to 1:40 pm, and then after the game, bring dad and the whole family down onto the field to run the bases and play catch in the outfield, thanks to Steak-N-Shake.

During the game, fans can play Travel Advisors Baseball Vacation Bingo for a chance to win a trip to Anaheim over Labor Day. And last, but certainly not least, the world-famous ZOOPERSTARS will be on hand to entertain fans throughout the game, sponsored by KCRG TV-9 and the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Get here when the gates open as early as 10 am for the brunch and 1 pm for the ballgame as the Kernels take on Wisconsin at 2 pm.

The Kernels will take three days off for the MWL All-Star Game on June 19th at 7 pm hosted by Kane County. Six Kernels will represent the team: Hank Conger, P.J. Phillips, Matt Sweeney, Chris Pettit, Tim Schoeninger and Doug Brandt. You can listen to the All-Star Game live via the internet - go to www.kernels.com and click on the special link to hear all the action of the MWL mid-season classic.

Tickets for these game and all regular season Kernels home games are available on-line at www.kernels.com , or by calling the Kernels Ticket Office at 896-7560. The ticket office is open from 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday and 10 am to 2 pm on Saturdays.
