Omaha Royals game notes

June 30, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

TONIGHT: The Royals open a 4-game series/home stand at Rosenblatt Stadium, hosting the Albuquerque Isotopes. Omaha is coming off a 10-6 road trip. Air-time is 6:45 on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com.

LAST ACTION: The Iowa Cubs swept a doubleheader from the Royals at Principal Park, winning 2-1 and 4-1. In the nightcap Tuesday, Shawn Camp (2-5) had a 1-0 lead and a no-hitter until two outs in the 6th, when Nate Freese singled. Trenidad Hubbard followed with a two-run homer to put Iowa ahead 2-1 and the Cubs scored two more times in the decisive inning. Iowa starter Rich Hill (2-1) allowed just one run on two hits over 6.2 innings, striking out ten Royals. In the opener, Iowa made the most of just three hits. Denny Bautista (0-1) took the loss in his 2nd rehab assignment start, allowing one run in 2.2 innings. Chris George surrendered Scott McClain's team-leading 17th home run for the decisive run.

ROYALS REPORT: The Royals' 10-6 record was their second-best on the CWS trip since it was expanded from 12 games to 16 games in 2000. Omaha went 11-5 on its long trek in 2003. This year, the Royals wound up outscoring their opponents 87-64 and out-homering them 27-14 on the trip. *** The Royals matched a season low by collecting just two hits in the nightcap on Tuesday. The three hits for Iowa in its 2-1 win in Tuesday night's opener also equaled a season low for an Omaha opponent. *** McClain's homer was the only hit and run allowed by George. In his last five games (three starts), George is 3-1 with a 2.43 ERA. *** KC reliever Jeremy Affeldt rejoins Omaha today to begin another rehab assignment for his groin injury. Affeldt made five rehab appearances with Omaha for the same ailment from May 24-June 4, going 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA. *** Scott Sullivan's rehab assignment has been ended after he re-injured his back. *** Paul Phillips has hit at a .382 clip (21-55) over his past 14 games, upping his average from .243 to .275. *** Cory Aldridge extended his hitting streak since joining Omaha to six games with a single in Tuesday's opener, but it was halted in the nightcap as he went 0-for-2. *** Adrian Brown is 6-for-his-last-34 (.176). *** Chad Santos is hitting .314 (11-35) with three homers and eight RBI over his past ten games. *** In 14 games of the road trip, Calvin Pickering hit .291 (16-55) with four home runs and nine RBI.

STARTERS: LH Donovan Osborne (0-0, 0.00) vs. RH Danny Tamayo (4-5, 5.27) Tamayo makes his 16th start (18th appearance) of the season. The 26-year old right-hander's last appearance was a June 24 start at New Orleans. He got the win in the Royals' 10-4 victory (5.0 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR). In 4 games (3 starts) on the trip, Tamayo was 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA. In 2 starts vs. Albuquerque, he's 0-2 with a 6.52 ERA. Tamayo was named by KC as the Royals Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2004. He spent most of last season with Wichita, going 12-7 with a 3.92 ERA in 25 starts, allowing only 36 walks and striking out 123 batters, in 142.1 innings. Tamayo was KC's 10th round pick in 2001 out of Notre Dame.
