Olympic Silver Medal Winner Eddy Alvarez Promoted to Charlotte

UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC-- Eddie Alvarez, a switch-hitting shortstop, who appeared in 104 games with the Birmingham Barons (Double-A) this season, has been promoted to the Charlotte Knights today. Alvarez, 26, will take the roster spot of infielder Danny Muno, who was released by the Chicago White Sox organization today. Charlotte's roster consists of 24 active players.
Alvarez, a native of Miami, FL, was hitting .263 (104-for-395) with 51 runs scored, 17 doubles, three triples, six home runs, 62 RBIs, and nine stolen bases in 104 games with the Birmingham Barons this season. He was signed by the White Sox as a free agent on June 10, 2014. Last season, the switch-hitting infielder hit .285 with Kannapolis (Low-A) in 89 games and .325 with Winston-Salem (High-A) in 34 games. An All-Conference shortstop at Salt Lake Community College in 2011, Alvarez represented Team USA at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. He went on to win an Olympic Silver Medal in the 5000m relay (speed skating).
Muno, 27, hit .211 (23-for-109) with nine runs scored, eight doubles, one home run, and 14 RBIs with the Knights in 33 games this season. The Long Beach, CA native began the season with Triple-A Las Vegas and hit .239 (21-for-88) in 47 games. Earlier in the day, the Knights announced two other roster moves. RHP Anthony Ranaudo was recalled to the Chicago White Sox to take the roster spot of RHP Carson Fulmer, who was optioned to Charlotte. Fulmer is not yet on Charlotte's active roster.
Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. tonight as the Knights host the Gwinnett Braves (Triple-A Affiliate of the Atlanta Braves) in a 7:05 p.m. game from BB&T Ballpark. Former Atlanta Braves catcher Javy Lopez, a three-time National League All-Star, will meet fans and sign free autographs.
