Oklahoma City Baseball Club News Release
TONIGHT:
The Oklahoma City RedHawks will try for their third set of back-to-back wins on the season in the second of a four-game series with the New Orleans Zephyrs (Florida Marlins) at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. The RedHawks won consecutive games twice on the previous homestand, but have not had a three-game winning streak this season. OKC is 5-4 at home and 9-10 overall. The Zephyrs are 7-13, with all 7 wins coming on the road via a 7-6 record. New Orleans is 0-7 at Zephyr Field so far this season. Righthander Jared Hyatt will make his second RedHawks start of the year after being promoted from Double-A Frisco, while ex-RedHawk John Koronka gets the ball for the Zephyrs. The RedHawks remain in second place in the American South Division, a half-game back of Albuquerque. The Zephyrs are third, 3 games out in the division.
REDHAWKS RALLY TO WIN OPENER:
Esteban German capped a 3-run bottom of the 10th for Oklahoma City last night with a game-winning single as the RedHawks rallied for an 8-7 win in the series opener over New Orleans. OKC grabbed a 5-0 lead through 4 innings, but the Zephyrs came back on a 3-run homer by John Lindsey off starter Michael Ballard in the sixth and a 2-run, game-tying double in the eighth off Derrick Turnbow. New Orleans added 2 runs in the 10th against eventual winning pitcher Pedro Strop (1-0). Zephyrs righthander Brian Sanches (0-1) entered in the 10th, but allowed a leadoff double to Ben Harrison, followed one out later by a walk and an RBI single by German Duran. With 2 outs, Joaquin Arias was down to his last strike when he blooped home the tying run as each team blew a save chance in the game. German followed with a soft liner to left to end the game. OKC is 2-1 in last at-bat decisions and also in extra innings.
NEW PARENT:
After 2 seasons in the New York Mets' organization, the New Orleans Zephyrs signed with the Florida Marlins in the off-season. Florida was previously affiliated with the Albuquerque Isotopes. New Orleans has been affiliated in its history with Milwaukee (1993-96), Houston (1997-2004), Washington (2005-06), the Mets (2007-08) and Florida.
FINALLY A "JIMMY JACK:"
The RedHawks allowed their first homer of more than 2 runs last night when John Lindsey belted a 3-run shot in the 6th against Michael Ballard. OKC has allowed the second-fewest homers in the PCL, 7, one more than Memphis. The RedHawks have yielded just 3 homers in the last 13 games, the previous two coming on April 23 vs. Omaha. OKC pitching has surrendered 4 solos, a pair of 2-run shots and last night's 3-run homer.
BORBON TAKES RBI LEAD:
Outfielder Julio Borbon drove in 2 runs last night to take over the team RBI lead with 10. Borbon leads the club in hits (25) and multi-hit games (8) and shares the lead with Esteban German with 5 stolen bases.
APRIL RECAP:
OKC finished April with a 9-10 record and 3.54 team ERA, tied for second lowest in the league with Portland (Memphis, 3.46). The RedHawks allowed the third-fewest runs (83) and fewest earned runs (65), while walking the third most hitters (85). OKC's .245 batting average was 13th in the league, while their 10 home runs tied with Reno for fewest hit. While they ranked 11th in runs (90) they did post the highest single-game total in April with a 17-3 win at Nashville April 16.
TURNBOW RELEASED:
Reliever Derrick Turnbow was granted his release today.
DOT...DOT...DOT:
OKC improved last night to 3-1 in Thursday games...Thursday is the only day of the week in which the RedHawks have multiple wins..they have 1 on each of the other days...the RedHawks won a series opener for the first time last night, improving their record to 1-5 to kick off a series...OKC reliever Pedro Strop saw his run of 14 consecutive retired batters snapped with a one-out single by Manny Mayorson in last night's 10th...reliever Beau Vaughan has not allowed a run all season a run in 12.1 innings pitched...he has allowed 5 hits with 13 strikeouts...the RedHawks have allowed the second-most unearned runs in the league (18, behind Nashville's 23)...all of OKC's unearned runs have come in the last 14 games after they allowed only earned runs in the first 5 games.
