Oil Kings Thaw Ice in 2-0 Shutout

December 1, 2012 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - Tristan Jarry turned aside 20 shots for the shutout while T.J. Foster and Henrik Samuelsson provided the offence with a goal apiece as the Oil Kings blanked the Kootenay Ice 2-0 on Friday night at Rexall Place. With the win, the Oil Kings avenged their 5-4 shootout loss on Wednesday in Cranbrook.

Foster opened the scoring six minutes into the night as he notched his 13th of the season. The native of Slave Lake took a pass from Michael St.Croix in the slot and buried top shelf to give the Kings the early 1-0 lead. Kootenay played a tight road game holding the score to 1-0 through the first frame despite being out shot 12-7.

The tight play continued in the second until rookie Brandon Baddock had his second WHL fight against Kootenay's Mike Simpson. The spirited tilt looked to spark the Oil Kings as Samuelsson made it a 2-0 game in the final minute of the period. Samuelsson picked up a great pass from St.Croix and was able to tuck in the breakaway goal with a nice forehand backhand.

Both Foster and Samuelsson continue to be on pace for a career seasons with 13 goals and 16 assists each. Foster is an undrafted 20 year old from Slave Lake, AB who is the Oil Kings all time leader with 296 career WHL games. Samuelsson, who hails from the United States was the first round selection of his hometown Phoenix Coyotes last summer.

The Oil Kings were determined to right the wrongs of Wednesday's loss as they pushed to put the game away at the start the third. Edmonton would go on to out shoot the Ice 14-3 in the third and 44-20 on the night.

The shutout was Jarry's second of his WHL career as he raised his record to 6-3-0-0. Jarry has had a breakout year so far with a 1.33 GAA and a 0.944 save percentage to go with his two shutouts.

The Edmonton penalty kill continued to dominate holding Kootenay to 0 for 3 with the man advantage. The Kings currently boast the number one ranked penalty kill in the league at a lethal 92.9%.
