Oil Kings Hand Out Awards Hardware

EDMONTON, AB- It was a record setting and memorable season for the Edmonton Oil Kings in the franchise's second year.

The team capped off their season with a banquet and awards ceremony this past weekend and goaltender Torrie Jung was the runaway winner taking home three awards.

The 19-year-old was a workhorse in net for the Oil Kings as he was the backbone in helping the Oil Kings solidify their first playoff berth in modern franchise history.

Jung won the Greg Tomalty Award as the Oil Kings MVP. He also took home the Three Stars Award as well as the Humanitarian Award.

In 48 regular season games, Jung posted a 20-20-3-5 record with a 2.56 GAA and a .912 SV% to go along with three shutouts. His 20 wins, three shutouts and his 2.56 GAA are all team records.

He followed it up with a spectacular playoffs where he posted a sparkling .917 SV% in the Oil Kings first round loss to the Calgary Hitmen.

Oil Kings rookie defenceman Mark Pysyk won the defenceman of the year award as well as rookie of the year honours.

Pysyk, a Sherwood Park native had a fine rookie campaign recording five goals and 15 assists in 61 games. He proved to be a key contributor on the Oil Kings blueline in his first full WHL season.

For the second straight year, the Oil Kings Top Scorer Award was shared. Co-captains Brenden Dowd and Jeff Lee finished their WHL careers with 62 points each setting team records for points in a season. Dowd led the Oil Kings with 29 goals, while Lee led the team in assists with 40, which are both franchise records.

It's the second time Dowd has had his name etched on the Top Scorers Trophy as he shared the award with Tomas Vincour and Craig McCallum last season when the trio finished with 39 points each.

The 2008-09 Oil Kings Scholastic Player of the Year Award went to forward Rhett Rachinski. The 17-year-old is a Grade 12 student at Salisbury Composite high school in Sherwood Park. He posted an 85.7% average during 2008-09 academic school year.

On the ice, Rachinski scored the biggest goal in a rare WHL tie-breaker game when he potted the overtime winner against the Prince Albert Raiders March 17th.

Rachinski would finish his rookie season with the Oil Kings with five goals, seven assists in 69 games.

The Oil Kings hand out a monthly Blue Willow Restaurant Unsung Hero Award. Taking home honours for the month of March was Oil Kings rookie defenceman Henrik Tervonen.

The 17-year-old emerged as a key member to the Oil Kings defensive corps down the stretch and finished his solid rookie season with one goal, and eight assists in 61 games.
