Toronto, ON - Ontario Hockey League action continues into the weekend with 24 games tonight through Sunday.

Here's a look at what's happening around the league this week.

28 PLAYERS TO REPRESENT OHL IN 2017 CIBC CANADA RUSSIA SERIES:

28 players will represent the OHL in the 2017 CIBC Canada Russia Series including 11 players who will compete in both Owen Sound (Nov. 9) and Sudbury (Nov. 13). A total of 16 players are listed on Team OHL rosters that received invites to Canada's National Junior Team Summer Showcase led by returning World Junior silver medalist Taylor Raddysh of the Erie Otters. The rosters feature 24 players who have been selected in the NHL Draft including first round picks Nick Suzuki of the Owen Sound Attack (Vegas Golden Knights, 13th in 2017), Logan Stanley of the Kitchener Rangers (Winnipeg Jets, 18th in 2016), Robert Thomas of the London Knights (St. Louis Blues, 20th in 2017), and Morgan Frost of the Sault Ste. 23 OHL PLAYERS TO REPRESENT CANADA AT 2017 WORLD UNDER-17 HOCKEY CHALLENGE:

A total of 23 OHL players will represent Canada at the 2017 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge that begins November 5th in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John, BC. The 23 players will be divided into three teams representing Team Canada Black, Team Canada Red, and Team Canada White when they compete against the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden, and the United States in their quest for a gold medal. 2017-18 OHL MEDIA INFORMATION GUIDE AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD:

The 2017-18 online edition of the Ontario Hockey League Media and Information Guide is now available for download. The Guide includes OHL team directories, statistics and standings from last season as well as historical seasons, records and award winners, and a complete 2017 playoff recap. Featured on the cover of this year's edition is Dylan Strome of the Erie Otters who captained his team to an OHL Championship as well as Mastercard Memorial Cup Champion Windsor Spitfires co-captains Jeremiah Addison and Jalen Chatfield. Gracing the back cover is Otters grad Alex DeBrincat who recorded a third straight 50-goal season to earn 2017 OHL and CHL Player of the Year honours. Full details

KNIGHTS' FORMENTON THE LATEST KEY RETURNEE FROM PRO RANKS:

The Ottawa Senators announced on Sunday that they've returned 2017 second round selection Alex Formenton to the London Knights. The 18-year-old from Barrie, Ont. made his NHL debut on October 7th against the Detroit Red Wings and returns to London where he recorded 34 points (16-18-34) over 65 games last season.

STING, GREYHOUNDS, ATTACK AND PETES IN CHL TOP 10 RANKINGS:

The Sarnia Sting have swarmed into the second spot on the weekly CHL Top 10 Rankings after a perfect three-in-three weekend. The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds stand strong in the sixth spot while the Owen Sound Attack are back in the rankings at number eight and the Peterborough Petes make their debut in the 10th spot. Full Rankings

STING SURGE TO RECORD EIGHTH STRAIGHT WIN:

The Sarnia Sting are off to their best start in club history, stringing together a record eight consecutive wins thanks to widespread contributions from emerging talent. Derian Hatcher's club has buzzed out of the gate to an OHL-best 9-1-0-0 record, riding a wave of momentum that led to a team record eighth straight win on Sunday in Windsor. Sarnia has been dominant, scoring a league leading 51 goals while surrendering a league low 25. Read more

STING'S BRADY HINZ NAMED OHL 'ON THE RUN' PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Forward Brady Hinz of the Sarnia Sting is the OHL 'On the Run' Player of the Week for the week ending October 15 with nine points in four games including six goals and three assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-6. Hinz led the league in scoring last week as the Sting climbed atop the OHL standings winning all four of their games to extend their win-streak to eight and improve their overall record to 9-1-0-0. WAWANESA OHL PLAYS OF THE WEEK:

The 4th edition of the Wawanesa OHL Plays of the Week for the 2017-18 season feature another collection of the league's Top-5 goals scored in the week ending October 15. This week's highlights include a shorthanded setup from Aaron Luchuk to Windsor Spitfires teammate Chris Playfair, Adam Ruzicka of the Sarnia Sting dangles his way to a goal, Jason Robertson of the Kingston Frontenacs with some nice moves in close, Andrei Svechnikov with a fantastic feed to Barrie Colts teammate Kyle Heitzner, and David Levin of the Sudbury Wolves who showcases the offensive abilities that made him a top OHL pick. ELEVEN PLAYERS SCORE FIRST GOALS ACROSS THE OHL LAST WEEK:

A total of 11 players were featured on OHL Milestone Moments this past week, scoring the first goal of their OHL careers. The crop included a quartet of 16-year-old rookies in first round selections Mitchell Brewer (Oshawa Generals), Nick Robertson (Peterborough Petes) and Brandon Coe (North Bay Battalion) along with second round pick Aidan Prueter (Saginaw Spirit). ATTACK'S GADJOVICH SIGNS WITH CANUCKS:

The Vancouver Canucks have signed 2017 second round (55th overall) pick Jonah Gadjovich of the Owen Sound Attack to a three-year entry level NHL contract. The 19-year-old from Whitby, Ont. has appeared in eight games for Owen Sound in 2017-18, collecting nine points (5-4-9) and 11 penalty minutes. Over the course of four seasons in the OHL, the 6-foot-2, 209-pound forward has accumulated 116 points (69-47-116) in 194 regular season games and nine points (5-4-9) in 26 playoff games with the Attack. RASMUS SANDIN COMMITS TO GREYHOUNDS:

The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds have received a commitment from 17-year-old Swedish defenceman Rasmus Sandin. GM Kyle Raftis officially announced on Wednesday that the 17-year old defenceman is expected to arrive in the Lock City ahead of the weekend. A native of Uppsala Sweden eligible for the 2018 NHL Draft, Sandin started the 2017-18 season with the Swedish Elite League's Rogle BK where he registered one assist over five contests. Read more

The Ontario Hockey League community joins the rest of Canada with heavy hearts following the passing of Mr. Gord Downie, a great Canadian artist who loved our country, the great game of hockey, and whose strength and determination was so inspirational for all Canadians from coast to coast. PETES RADIO VOICE ROB SNOEK INDUCTED INTO CANADIAN DISABILITY HALL OF FAME:

Peterborough Petes radio play-by-play voice Rob Snoek will was inducted into the Canadian Disability Hall of Fame on Wednesday. The three-time Paralympian represented Canada in track and field for over 12 years. A below-knee amputee from age one due to a congenital bone disease, he grew up playing sports at a high competitive level in Orono, Ontario. Upon discovering the Paralympics in his late teens, Rob redoubled his training and went on to compete in the Games in Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000, as well as at four world championships. The induction ceremony was held on Wednesday at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. The Canadian Disability Hall of Fame provides permanent recognition of outstanding Canadians who have made extraordinary contributions to enriching the quality of life for people with physical disabilities. WOLVES GRADUATE RYAN McKIE FEATURED ON MASTERCARD JUNIOR HOCKEY MAGAZINE:

Host Gino Reda catches up with Sudbury Wolves graduate Ryan McKie who now serves as a Financial Advisor with CIBC. The Kenora, Ont. native played four OHL seasons between the London Knights and Sudbury Wolves from 1995-99 before attending Western University where he played men's hockey for the Mustangs from 1999-2003. Spitfires raise Mastercard Memorial Cup Championship banner: The Windsor Spitfires celebrated in style last Thursday night, raising their 2017 Mastercard Memorial Cup championship banner to the heights of the WFCU Centre before proceeding to defeat the visiting London Knights 3-1. Graduated captain Jeremiah Addison returned for the pre-game festivities, joining seven Spits teammates that remain with the club including current captain Aaron Luchuk, goaltender Michael DiPietro, forwards Luke Boka and Cole Purboo as well as defencemen Sean Day, Austin McEneny and Tyler Nother. 67's salute the past on Friday: The Ottawa 67's will salute their 1977-87 era as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations on Friday at home to the Oshawa Generals. This decade featured the franchise's first Mastercard Memorial Cup title, won at the 1984 event in Kitchener with a team that included such names as Gary Roberts, Darren Pang, Brad Shaw, Bruce Cassidy and Memorial Cup MVP Adam Creighton. Generals to honour Tony Tanti on Saturday: Tony Tanti's #22 will ascent to the heights of Tribute Communities Centre on Saturday, joining the likes of other Oshawa Generals greats Bobby Orr (#2), Red Tilson (#9), Marc Savard (#27), Eric Lindros (#88) and John Tavares (#91). Tanti had three tremendous seasons in Oshawa, scoring 81 goals and 150 points as a rookie in 1980-81 before being selected 12th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1981 NHL Draft. He followed up with 126 points in 1981-82 before playing half of the 1982-83 season with the Gennies while making his NHL debut. He went on to enjoy a 12-year, 697-game NHL career that included a total of 560 points (287-273-560) between Chicago, Vancouver, Pittsburgh and Buffalo. Spirit host 11th annual 'Pink Out' on Saturday: The Saginaw Spirit will be raising funds for the St. Mary's of Michigan Breast Care Fund on Saturday night when they'll be decked out in pink at home to the Guelph Storm. Firebirds Face-Off Against Breast Cancer on Saturday: The Flint Firebirds will suit up in pink on Saturday at home to the Peterborough Petes to raise money for a good cause. The Birds are teaming up with McLaren Flint Foundation for the third straight year to raise money in the fight against breast cancer. IceDogs host Autism Awareness Night on Saturday: The Niagara IceDogs will raise awareness for a special cause on Saturday night when they play host to the Ottawa 67's. Wolves donate $7,500 to NEO Kids from 2017 Superhero Game: The Sudbury Wolves are pleased to announce that last season's 2nd annual Superhero game in support of North Eastern Ontario Kids Foundation, NEO Kids, raised $7,500 for the charity. The money was raised from a silent auction of the special Batman themed jerseys that the team wore last season on the Family Day long weekend in February. Read more

McDavid, DeBrincat go head-to-head on Thursday: Former Erie Otters teammates and OHL Player of the Year recipients Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers and Alex DeBrincat of the Chicago Blackhawks go head-to-head on Thursday night. McDavid's Oilers head into Chicago looking to reverse a four-game skid against a 4-2-1 Blackhawks squad. McDavid and DeBrincat remain two of the best players in Erie Otters franchise history, each leaving their mark on the Ontario Hockey League. Tonight's matchup gets underway at 8:30pm ET on Sportsnet One.

Tippett makes NHL debut: Mississauga Steelheads winger Owen Tippett made his NHL debut with the Florida Panthers in Philadelphia on Tuesday. Tippett registered seven shots on goal over 11:39 of action as the Cats fell 5-1 to the Flyers. The 18-year-old Peterborough, Ont. native was Florida's first round (10th overall) pick this past summer after a 44-goal season with the Steelheads. Tippett helped Mississauga reach the OHL Championship Series as Eastern Conference Champions last spring, recording 19 points (10-9-19) over 20 playoff contests.

Dunn scores first NHL goal: Niagara IceDogs graduate Vince Dunn scored his first career NHL goal on Thursday as the St. Louis Blues fell 5-2 in Florida. The 20-year-old native of Peterborough, Ont. has appeared in six games this season after being St. Louis' second round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. Dunn played in 72 games with the AHL's Chicago Wolves last season, recording 13 goals, 32 assists and 45 points. He played three OHL seasons with the Niagara IceDogs from 2013-16, helping the club reach the OHL Championship Series in 2016.

Subban earns first NHL win: OHL graduate Malcolm Subban recorded his first career NHL win on Sunday, backstopping the Vegas Golden Knights to a 3-1 win over his former club the Boston Bruins. Subban was waived by the Bruins prior to the start of the season before being claimed by Vegas. The 23-year-old made 22 saves in Sunday's victory, marking the third appearance of his NHL career. Formerly Boston's first round pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, Subban played three seasons with the Belleville Bulls from 2010-13, helping the club reach the Eastern Conference Final in 2013. He posted an OHL-best 2.14 goals-against average and .934 save percentage during the 2012-13 season. The native of Rexdale, Ont., younger brother of P.K. and older brother of Jordan has spent the past four seasons in the American Hockey League.

Kings recall Auger: The Los Angeles Kings have called up Guelph Storm graduate Justin Auger from the AHL's Ontario Reign. A 23-year-old native of Waterloo, Ont., Auger was an OHL champion with the Storm in 2014 when he capped off a three-year OHL career. A fourth round pick of Los Angeles in 2013, the 6-foot-7, 230Ib. winger has spent the past three seasons in the American Hockey League.

Jets call up Lemieux: The Winnipeg Jets have recalled Windsor Spitfires graduate Brendan Lemieux from the AHL's Manitoba Moose. The 21-year-old recorded five points (3-2-5) through his first four games with the Moose after a 19-point (12-7-19) rookie season in Manitoba last year. The former second round pick of the Buffalo Sabres in 2014 played five OHL seasons between the Barrie Colts and Windsor Spitfires, compiling 189 points (106-83-189) over 209 career regular season games.

Duchene, Hodgson featured on Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour: The Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour stopped in Haliburton, ON last weekend, and a pair of prominent Brampton Battalion grads in Matt Duchene and Cody Hodgson were featured prominently. A native of Halliburton, Duchene was profiled as he reminisced about cottage life and discussed charitable efforts through his annual golf tournament. A best friend of Duchene's Hodgson joined Ron MacLean and Tara Slone on the panel to discuss his community work with the Nashville Predators this season. Kilrea to be inducted into AHL Hall of Fame: OHL coaching legend Brian Kilrea will be inducted into the American Hockey League Hall of Fame on January 29th. The winningest coach in CHL history, Kilrea also had an illustrious playing career over 10 seasons in the AHL from 1959-69. The Ottawa native played a part in three consecutive Calder Cup titles with the Springfield Indians from 1959-61 and led the league in assists with 73 during the 1962 campaign. Kilrea scored the first goal in Los Angeles Kings franchise history in 1967 and played in a total of 26 career NHL contests. A Hockey Hall of Fame inductee in 2003, Kilrea totalled 624 points over his 623 career AHL contests. He'll join Jim Bartlett, Don Biggs and Glenn Merkosky at the induction ceremony in Verona, NY on January 29th. For more information visit theahl.com.

Keefe becomes third-fastest AHL coach to reach 100 wins: Former Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds head coach and once-prolific OHL scorer Sheldon Keefe earned his 100th American Hockey League win with the Toronto Marlies on Sunday. The 37-year-old former OHL Coach of the Year needed just 157 games to reach the century mark, becoming the third-fastest coach in AHL history to reach the milestone. Keefe is currently in his third season as head coach in Toronto after a three-year stint with the Greyhounds from 2012-15. Keefe recorded 237 points (99-138-237) over 132 career OHL contests from 1998-2000, capping off his junior career as an OHL Champion with the Barrie Colts.

Influx of OHL coaching talent in AHL ranks: Four of the American Hockey League's new head coaches for the 2017-18 season are OHL products. Those new faces behind AHL benches include Mike Vellucci (Charlotte Checkers/Plymouth Whalers), Rocky Thompson (Chicago Wolves/Windsor Spitfires), Mike Van Ryn (Tucson Roadrunners/Kitchener Rangers) and Trent Cull (Utica Comets/Sudbury Wolves). Additionally, OHL graduate Chris Taylor (LDN, 1988-92) is the new head coach of the Rochester Americans.

Handful of OHL grads score first AHL goal: A number of recent OHL graduates scored their first American Hockey League goals this past week including Anthony Cirelli (Syracuse Crunch/Erie Otters), Mitchell Stephens (Syracuse Crunch/London Knights), Erik Cernak (Syracuse Crunch/Erie Otters), Darren Raddysh (Rockford IceHogs/Erie Otters), Zach Senyshyn (Providence Bruins, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds), Niki Petti (Laval Rocket/Hamilton Bulldogs) and Stefan LeBlanc (Laval Rocket/Mississauga Steelheads). A total of 163 OHL alumni started the 2017-18 season on American Hockey League rosters. Read more

Hodgson, Spinozzi, Tyanulin make the jump to AHL ranks: Three more players from the 2016-17 season have successfully made the jump to the American Hockey League. Hayden Hodgson (Saginaw Spirit), Kevin Spinozzi (Sarnia Sting) and Artur Tyanulin (Ottawa 67's) are all embarking on the next stage of their hockey careers. Hodgson enters the 2017-18 season with the Cleveland Monsters, the top affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Hodgson put up career-highs last season with 38 goals in 67 games with the Saginaw Spirit. His five-year career included 294 games and 157 points (87-70-157). A former Sarnia Sting captain, Kevin Spinozzi recorded 13 goals and 41 points over 58 games last season, rounding out a five-year OHL career. He signed a PTO with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on October 4th, the top affiliate of the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins. Tyanulin comes off an 85-point season with the Ottawa 67's. The 20-year-old played parts of three seasons in the nation's capital and signed a PTO with the Tucson Roadrunners (Arizona Coyotes) on October 6th.

Meurs, Houser earn weekly ECHL honours: OHL graduates Garrett Meurs and Michael Houser have been recognized as top performers by the ECHL. Meurs was named the league's Player of the Week after recording four goals, two assists and six points over two games with the Wheeling Nailers. The 24-year-old native of Ripley, Ont. played four OHL seasons with the Plymouth Whalers from 2009-13, recording 193 points (78-115-193) over 265 regular season contests. In goal, Fort Wayne Komets netminder Michael Houser was named the league's Goaltender of the Week. The London Knights graduate and 2012 OHL Goaltender of the Year made 25 saves in 4-2 win over the Toledo Walleye on Saturday. The native of Youngstown, OH, played three seasons with the Knights from 2009-12, leading the club to an OHL championship in 2012.

KEY MATCHUPS:

Peterborough Petes (7-2-0-1) at Flint Firebirds (5-3-1-0) Saturday October 21st at Flint

The Peterborough Petes enter the week on a four game winning streak, travelling west for a three-in-four stint with visits to Windsor, Flint and Saginaw. Expectations in Peterborough were high at the outset of the 2017-18 season after the club reached the Eastern Conference Final last spring. The Petes have lived up to that high billing thus far with Florida Panthers prospect Jonathan Ang (4-9-13) leading the club in scoring while the return of Nikita Korostelev (3-4-7) from an AHL tryout with the Toronto Marlies has given the Petes a shot in the arm.

The Petes face the tall task of going into Flint on Saturday night to face a Firebirds team that has found success on home ice this season. They started 3-0-0-0 at the Dort Federal Event Center prior to Sunday's loss to the Kitchener Rangers. Firebirds overage winger Maurizio Colella has had the hot hand early this season, leading the team in scoring with 12 points (6-6-12) over nine games while centreman Ryan Moore has collected 12 (3-9-12) in seven. Recently acquired defenceman Nicolas Mattinen has paid big dividends for the Firebirds, registering seven points (2-5-7) through his first nine games in blue and orange.

Sarnia Sting (9-1-0-0) at Barrie Colts (7-2-0-1) Saturday October 21st at Barrie

Two high octane offences go toe-to-toe on Saturday in Barrie as the Andrei Svechnikov, Alexey Lipanov, Lucas Chiodo and the Colts host the 9-1-0-0 Sarnia Sting. Barrie earned a pair of wins last weekend, staging a comeback victory over the North Bay Battalion on Saturday. Top 2018 NHL Draft prospect Svechnikov became the OHL's first 10-goal scorer over the weekend. He sits second in the OHL with 46 shots on goal. Not to be overlooked, forwards Jason Willms (4-7-11) and Zach Magwood (7-3-10) also have a point-per-game on the season.

Entering last weekend as the CHL's eighth ranked club, the Sarnia Sting only improved upon their hot start, stretching their current winning streak to a franchise record eight games with a perfect 3-in-3 set. Calgary Flames prospect Adam Ruzicka leads the club with 15 points (8-7-15) while St. Louis Blues second round pick Jordan Kyrou follows with 14 (4-10-14) over eight games. The Sting have scored at least six goals six different times this season.
