December 5, 2012 - Canadian Football League (CFL) - Ottawa RedBlacks
(Ottawa, ON.): The Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) today announced the commencement of its "Name Our Teams" campaign for fans to submit their choices for the nicknames of Ottawa's new CFL Football and NASL Soccer teams. The campaign will run from December 6th through December 16th and the official team nicknames will be announced early in the new year.
"It's exciting to finally be out of the gate with the campaign to nickname our soccer and football teams," said Jeff Hunt, President, OSEG Sports Properties. "Over the last several months I've received hundreds of name suggestions from fans and non-fans, many of them of them very interesting possibilities, and now it's time to document those ideas and make decisions." John Pugh, President of the Ottawa NASL soccer team added: "The goal is to choose team nicknames that have widespread appeal to all age groups and then develop logos and unique team branding that get people excited about the return of CFL football and the debut of NASL soccer."
The Ottawa team nicknames will be decided by OSEG partners in collaboration with CFL/NASL executives and a team of marketing/branding professionals contracted by OSEG. The name "Roughriders" or anything that contains "Riders" cannot be adopted as a football team nickname, as specified in the Ottawa franchise agreement with the CFL.
