Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA - The Visalia Rawhide (23-13) offense was stymied once again in a 5-2 loss to the High Desert Mavericks (25-12) on Sunday afternoon at Rawhide Ballpark.
The Rawhide offense generated five hits in the 5-2 loss to the Mavericks and 1B Marty Herum had four of them, going four-for-four in the contest with three singles and a two-run home run. RF Victor Reyes had the other hit, an infield single in the loss.
RHP Ethan Elias (2-2, 5.17) was tagged for four runs in the first three innings of the game before settling down. High Desert, in the first, courtesy of two wild pitches, an error and two hit batsman scored a run to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks added a run in the second inning on a walk, a wild pitch, an error and an RBI single by LF Scott Heineman to take a 2-0 lead over Visalia.
1B Juremi Profar went deep in the third inning, his second home run of the season that gave High Desert a 4-0 lead. The Rawhide have now given up a home run in four consecutive ball games.
Taylor pitched six innings and allowed five hits and four runs (earned) on two walks and he struck out three in the loss. He finished strong, retiring the eight men he faced.
Herum, who singled in the second, fourth and eighth innings, connected for his first California League home run in the sixth inning against LHP Felix Caravallo for the only offense of the game for Visalia.
LHP Yohander Mendez (4-1, 2.45) threw five scoreless innings, allowing one walk and recording six strikeouts to earn the win.
High Desert scored their final tally in the seventh against LHP Jared Miller after lead-off man and CF Jose Cardona walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third base. 2B Travis Demeritte drove him in with an RBI ground out and it was 5-2 Mavericks.
RHP Jensy Solis pitched the final two frames for Visalia, holding High Desert off the board but the offense generated nothing late and the Rawhide fell 5-2. They now look to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Mavericks tomorrow afternoon.
Visalia, in this series, has now scored five runs on 17 hits in three losses while allowing 21 runs on 30 hits to High Desert.
RHP Taylor Clarke (0-1, 7.50) makes his second start of the season against RHP Ariel Jurado (3-1, 4.30) of the Mavericks in the finale, with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
