Daytona Tortugas News Release
Jupiter, FL - The Daytona Tortuga's offense had no answer for the Palm Beach Cardinals pitching, striking out a season-high 15 times in their 4-2 loss at Roger Dean Stadium Tuesday night. Daytona has lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.
Daytona had to play catch up for the second straight night. After squandering a lead-off double by Ty Washington to begin the game, the Tortugas found themselves down 1-0 after the first inning. Palm Beach got on the board with a Danny Diekroeger triple to right field. Blake Butler followed up in the second inning with a two-out RBI double to score Jeff Gelalich, who tripled with one out, tying the game at one.
However, the tie didn't last long, as Palm Beach touched up Tortugas' starter Jake Paulson for three runs in the fourth with a two-run triple by Mikey Reynolds highlighting the inning, making it a 4-1 Daytona deficit. It was one of three Cardinal triples in the game.
Daytona tacked on a run in the eighth on a throwing error by Palm Beach catcher Steve Bean, allowing Aristides Aquino to score, giving the game it's final score of 4-2.
Angelo Gumbs finished the night with a pair of hits and was the only Daytona batter to not strikeout.
The eight other Tortugas struck out, including a pair who struck out four times each. Daytona ended the game with 18 of their final 23 batters retired, with 12 of them going down on strikes.
RHP Paulson became the fourth pitcher in six games to fail to get through the fourth inning. He took the loss, allowing three earned runs in five innings of work. LHP Ian McKinney picked up the win for the Cardinals, tossing five innings of one-run ball while striking out six.
The Tortugas are back at Roger Dean Stadium Wednesday night for the third game of the four game series against Palm Beach. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 P.M., with the Chili's pregame show beginning at 6:20 P.M. on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
NOTES: The Tortugas are averaging almost ten strikeouts a game through their first six games of the season...Angelo Gumbs is hitting .400 and has produced back-to-back multi-hit efforts. He now has three multi-hit games this season...The 15 strikeouts are tied for second most in Tortugas history. The single-game record was set against the Palm Beach Cardinals back on May 11th, 2015 when Daytona whiffed 16 times.
