Midland RockHounds News Release

RockHounds first baseman Viosergy Rosa went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI in Friday night's 8-5, 11-inning loss to the San Antonio Missions at Security Bank Ballpark. (Richard A. Acosta) A game played on Friday, September 2nd might have been more appropriately for Friday the 13th. The San Antonio Missions defeated the RockHounds, 8-5, at Security Bank Ballpark, and did so in a game that had some unusual occurrences:

- The RockHounds were one strike away from a win in the ninth, leading, 5-3, with one on, two out and an 0-2 count on the Missions' # 9 batter. Nelson Ward then took Jake Sanchez's 0-2 offering into the short porch in right field, tying the game at 5-5. Ward later had the game-winning RBI, a single to right-center that broke the deadlock in the 11th (Ward went 2-for-4, with three runs and three runs batted in).

- Of the 13 runs scored Friday night, six came on 0-2 counts. Three of those came on the first of two home runs off the bat of Viosergy Rosa. The RockHounds first baseman tied the game at 3-3 with a 0-2 drive to right in the sixth and broke the tie with a two-run HR in the eighth.

- There were four errors in the game, all charged to a player in his first Double-A game, and one with an outstanding defensive resume (see below).

Kibbles & Bits

STAT of the DAY: The RockHounds did not have a pitch thrown by a left-hander until July 5, when Brandon Mann made his debut. Friday, the 'Hounds added a second lefty when Danny Oh took the mound in the 11th ... facing one batter and striking him out. That hitter was Gabriel Quintana, who is tied for sixth in the Texas League with 20 home runs and third with 73 RBI. The 'Hounds will likely end the season with just two left-handers having thrown as much as a single pitch ... one of them an outfielder!

A CRUEL GAME: Top 10 Oakland prospect Richie Martin had a long day of travel in order to join the RockHounds for Friday's game. His day got much longer on the diamond, and it's another reminder of how heartless a sport can be. Selected by the A's with 20th overall selection in the 2015 draft out of the University of Florida, Richie's well-earned reputation is that of an outstanding defender. Friday night, he was charged with four errors in his Double-A debut and (just to cap the night) was a strikeout victim to end the game (he also drew two walks and stole a base). As the songwriter once penned, "there are brighter days ahead."

Pitcher Heath Fillmyer was placed on the disabled list and pitcher Kris Hall has been reassigned to the Arizona League A's. James Naile has rejoined the RockHounds from Class-A Advanced Stockton and will start the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. The right-hander, who made two starts for the 'Hounds in June, was 4-1 with a 3.76 ERA in eight games with the Ports.
