 Cape Breton Eagles

Oceanic Edge Eagles 4-1

October 6, 2017 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Cape Breton Eagles News Release

The Screaming Eagles would outshoot the Oceanic 10-9 in the opening frame, but the clubs were locked at one following twenty minutes. Maxime Trépanier would open the scoring for the home team on a broken play at the 8:39 mark when he backhanded it through the legs of Cape Breton netminder Kevin Mandolese. A power play marker from Drake Batherson would tie the contest as he hammered a shot from the top of the circle just nine seconds into a minor penalty to Rimouski's Denis Mikhnin. Mandolese ensured the game would be tied at the intermission after a stop on a 2 on 1 on Samuel Dove McFalls. The odd man rush was limited as Declan Smith of the Eagles helped clogged the passing lane to assist his goaltender.

However, Rimouski would pull ahead in the early going of the second period when defenseman Charle-Edouard D'Astous would jump into the play and receive a pass from Dmitry Zavgorodniy and beat Mandoelese to put the Oceanic ahead 2-1. The lead would expand towards the end of the second period when former Eagle Yannik Bertrand tipped a point shot on the man advantage.

Shots would be limited in the final stanza on both sides, as Rimouski outshot Cape Breton 8-6. The Oceanic tried to put the game away but a would be fourth Rimouski goal was disallowed because it was ruled the net was dislodged. Shortly after killing a penalty to Leon Gawanke, Marc-André Dumont would call a timeout for his team and would lift Mandolese for the extra attacker with just over two minutes left.

There would be some pressure from Cape Breton but as the final minute began Rimouski cleared the zone and had a 2 on 1 opportunity. Trépanier could have hit the open cage himself but elected to pass off to Zavgorodniy who slid the puck past the goal line for his first ever QMJHL goal.

Former Eagle Colten Ellis would stop 26 of 27 in the victory. Mandolese turned aside 25 of 28 in the loss before the empty netter.

Cape Breton continues their road swing as they take on former Screaming Eagle Vasily Glotov and the Shawinigan Cataractes on Saturday. Puck drop is 7 PM Atlantic time, and you can catch all the action starting with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 6:30 on 1270 AM CJCB or online at http://www.cjcbradio.com.
