Nuts Surrender Four Unanswered Runs In Ten-Inning Loss

Modesto, CA. - One strike away from a win, the Modesto Nuts coughed up a two-run lead to fall 4-2 in ten innings against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Monday night at John Thurman Field.

With a run in and the bases clear, Luis Niebla was one strike away from locking down a save, Niebla walked Will Smith before giving up back-to-back singles to tie the game.

The Quakes (26-25; 68-53) pulled ahead for the first time on Monday night in the tenth when Erick Mejia roped a two-run single into left off Marc Magliaro (L, 0-2).

Corey Coppling (W, 2-0) worked the final three innings out of the Quakes' bullpen without allowing a hit.

The Nuts (22-28; 48-73) had taken the lead in the fourth with four hits and two runs. Drew Weeks whacked a RBI single before scoring when Ryan Stephens drove him in with a single of his own.

Ryan Castellani had thrown well in his start for Modesto. The Nuts' righty worked seven shutout innings allowing just three hits while striking out six and not walking a batter. He retired the final 13 men he faced.
