Clearwater Threshers News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Shane Watson earned his first victory in a Threshers uniform on Thursday, and Chace Numata belted his first home run of the season as the Clearwater Threshers topped the Charlotte Stone Crabs by a 4-2 final at Charlotte Sports Park.

Watson (1-2) retired 11 straight from the third into the seventh inning, holding the Stone Crabs off the board until his final frame. He turned in 6.1 innings of one-run ball, scattering five hits without issuing a walk. He threw just 73 pitches, 48 of them for strikes.

Numata's home run came in the ninth inning, a lead-off blast to right that gave the Threshers some breathing room with a 4-2 lead.

The game was delayed 15 minutes due to rain before the conslusion of the ninth. In the bottom half, Alexis Rivero issued a lead-off walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but the righty got Mac James to fly out after a seven-pitch battle before striking out Grant Kay and Alec Sole to lock down his fifth save in as many tries.

Clearwater (33-25) grabbed a quick lead in the first and would not look back.

With rehabbing lefty Jonny Venters (0-1) on the hill, Andrew Pullin grounded a hard single through the right side and Scott Kingery followed with a bunt single to put two men on with one out in the first.

Kyle Martin came through to get the Threshers on the board, pulling a single to right to score Pullin with the game's first run.

The Threshers extended that margin with a pair in the third inning.

Pullin pounded a triple past the dive of right fielder Jace Conrad with one down, and with the infield drawn in Kingery blooped a base hit beyond short to score Pullin.

After Martin walked, a passed ball moved the runners into scoring position, and Zach Green lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Kingery and make it 3-0.

Charlotte (30-30) pulled close in the seventh, after Mac James singled off Watson to start the inning and moved to second on a bunt.

Clearwater called upon reliever Ulises Joaquin, and Sole greeted him with a triple to right-center to get the Stone Crabs on the board. Bralin Jackson's groundout to second made it a one-run game, but Joaquin got Thomas Milone to pop out to short to end the inning.

The teams will face off for game three of the four-game set on Friday, as Thomas Eshelman (3-2) toes the slab against Chris Pike (2-5). First pitch is at 6:35 p.m., and the game can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:20 p.m.
