Nowak Writes More Revolution History As Revs Defeat Skeeters

September 5, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

Chris Nowak broke his own York Revolution single season home run record with a pair of blasts including a grand slam in an 8-3 Revs victory over the Sugar Land Skeeters on Wednesday night at Sovereign Bank Stadium. The win lowers the Revs' magic number to 12 in the Wild Card race which they lead by 6.0 full games, while they also pull within 4.5 games of Lancaster for first place. York will conclude its eight-game homestand with the series finale against the Skeeters on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Sugar Land scored a run in each of the first two innings to take an early lead. Jason Lane opened the scoring with a first inning sacrifice fly, but it was the only run allowed in the inning by spot starter Wade Korpi, who worked out of a bases loaded no-out jam to limit the damage. Aaron Bates connected on a solo homer to left-center an inning later, his second in as many nights, putting York in a 2-0 hole.

The Revs came back to tie it at 2-2 in the bottom of the second. Nowak and Johan Limonta led off the inning with singles and advanced to second and third respectively on a deep fly out to right by Michael Hernandez. Skeeters starter Michael Nix then uncorked a wild pitch to score Nowak, with Limonta racing home to score on the same play when catcher Manny Mejia's throw to the plate bounced away, resulting in an error.

Nowak nailed his first long ball of the night leading off the bottom of the fourth, landing in left-center to give York a 3-2 lead. It was the 26th home run of the season for Nowak, breaking his own club record for a single season of 25 set the year before.

Nowak then added a grand slam an inning later on a drive over the Arch Nemesis in left field, increasing the lead to 7-2. Of his club record 52 career home runs with York, it was his first grand slam. It is also the fourth multi-homer game of the season for Nowak, and seventh of his Revs career.

York added one more run in the seventh when Joe Thurston, who led off with a double, scored on a wild pitch.

Korpi allowed just two runs in four innings in his assignment as the team's spot starter. York's bullpen combined to allow just an eighth inning unearned run on an error in five innings of work, with Stephen Penney (2-1) claiming the win, stranding runners at second and third in a scoreless fifth with the lead just one run at the time. York pitching stranded a total of 12 runners for the night, eight in scoring position.

Nix (4-10) took the loss, charged with five runs in 4.1 innings.

Notes: Nowak's 27 home runs lead the league, and with five RBI on the night, he also takes over the league lead with 88 RBI for the season. It was his fourth game of four or more RBI on the season, all since August 14. He now has 47 RBI in 41 games played since July 23. All four of his multi-homer games on the year have occurred since July 31. He now has 16 home runs in 49 games played since July 15. York's Corey Thurman (11-3, 3.98) will face Sugar Land's Kelvin Villa (2-6, 4.94) in Thursday's finale at 6:30 p.m. It is Maple Donuts Night, as fans who buy a dozen donuts from any Maple Donuts store beginning August 23 get two free tickets to Thursday's game. Tickets are on-sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
