Biloxi Shuckers News Release

JACKSON, TN. - The Biloxi Shuckers let a late lead slip away on Thursday night, but rebounded with a 4-3, 11-inning victory over the Jackson Generals at the Ballpark at Jackson to open up a five-game set. The Shuckers improve to 6-5 in extra innings during the 2016 season with the win.

Biloxi (19-29, 58-57) pieced together three consecutive hits with two outs in the 11th to grab the lead in extra innings.

Rene Garcia (2x5, RBI) and Angel Ortega (0x4, BB) were set down to start the inning, but Brett Phillips (2x5, R, BB) and Tyrone Taylor (1x5, R) both singled to keep the inning alive for Jacob Nottingham (3x6, 2 2B, 2 RBI). The Shuckers' designated hitter hit a roller to the hole at short that was cut off by Benji Gonzalez, but the shortstop had no play. Phillips scored from second on the play to give Biloxi the one-run edge.

Tristan Archer (4-4) worked his second inning out of the bullpen in the bottom half of the 11th and worked a perfect frame to pick up his fourth win of the season. The right-hander tossed two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out three.

Stephen Kohlscheen came on in the ninth to close the game with a two-run lead, but gave up a two-run double to Tyler O'Neill to knot the game at three.

Adam Law struck out to leadoff the ninth, but Ian Miller was hit by a pitch and Benji Gonzalez took a walk in front of Tim Lopes' single to right to load the bases. O'Neill deposited a two-bagger down the line in left to tie the game and send the contest into extras.

Biloxi scratched across the first two runs in the game in the second to take an early lead.

Back-to-back walks to Javier Betancourt (1x4, R, BB) and Tom Belza (2x4, R, BB) set up Rene Garcia's (2x5, RBI) run-scoring single through the right side of the infield, setting up runners at the corners. Angel Ortega (0x4, BB) bounced into a double play, plating Belza for the second run of the inning.

Jackson (27-18, 73-42) cut Biloxi's lead in half with a run of its own in the fourth.

Law collected an infield single with two outs to give the Generals their first base runner of the inning. With Miller at the plate, Law swiped second. Miller singled on a live drive to right to score Law and end the night for Shuckers' starter, Luis Ortiz.

Tayler Scott took over for Ortiz and picked off Miller to end the inning.

Ortiz lasted 3.2 innings in his second outing as a Shucker, allowing a run on five hits, two walks and three strikeouts. The 20-year-old right-hander tossed 64 pitches, 38 for strikes.

Biloxi had a chance in the top of the seventh to add insurance to its lead, but came up empty in a bases-loaded opportunity.

Belza and Garcia reached on singles to start the frame, but Ortega failed to put down a sacrifice, and bunted a two-strike pitch foul for the first out. After Phillips drew a free pass to load the bases, Taylor popped out and Nottingham struck out to end the threat.

Angel Ventura took over on the mound to start the fifth for Biloxi. The 23-year-old allowed one hit, walked three and struck out two in his first relief appearance at the Double-A level.

Nottingham gave the Shuckers the padded lead they were looking for with a two-out, RBI double to left, scoring Taylor from first to extend the lead back to two.

Ryne Harper (4-3) suffered the loss for the Generals with a run allowed on three hits and a strikeout in an inning of work.

The Shuckers go for the two-game lead in the five-game series on Friday night at the Ballpark at Jackson. RHP Taylor Jungmann (1-2, 260) takes the mound for Biloxi against RHP Andrew Moore (7-1, 3.06) for Jackson.
