North Adams Tops Vermont, 6-3

The Vermont Mountaineers lost 6-3 to the North Adams SteepleCats on Sunday afternoon in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).

Vermont allowed three runs in the first inning, and they were never able to come back. Dustin Shirley (Los Angeles, Calif./Dartmouth) got the offense going for North Adams with an RBI double, driving in Nick Riotto (Washington, Pa./Penn State). Shirley then came across to score thanks to a single by Edward Haus (Ran. Pa. Verdes, Calif./St Marys). C.J. Price (Naples, Fla./Cornell) drove in the third run of the game for the 'Cats in with a fielders choice, allowing Daniel Holst (Durango, Colo./SE Missouri St.) to score.

The Mountaineers got four and a third innings out of starter Joe Jacques (Shrewsbury, N.J./Manhattan), who allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits. The lefty walked three and struck out four.

The Steeple Cats started Peter Lannoo (Terre Haute, Ind./Cornell), who threw four innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walking three and striking out one.

North Adams got another run in the bottom of the third when Keaton Wright (Troy, Ill./So. Il. Edwardsville) walked and scored thanks to an error by Vermont's shortstop.

A solo homerun by Wright in the fifth and an RBI fielder's choice by Shirley in the sixth capped the scoring for the Steeple Cats.

Vermont's offensive production came in the fourth and sixth innings. Catcher Slade Heggen (Missoula, Mo./Oregon) got them started when he reached on a fielder's choice and drove in Troy Scocca (Syosset, N.Y./Fairfield). Daniel Little later drove in Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif./Stony Brook) with an RBI single.

Vermont got one more in the top of the sixth when left fielder Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, Okla./Arkansas Little Rock) scored on a passed ball.

Brian Stepniak (Dallas, Pa./Hartford) got the win for North Adams, pitching two innings in relief and allowing no runs on no hits.

Jacques suffered the loss for Vermont.

The Mountaineers fall to 3-12 on the year. Vermont will return home Monday for the first of a three-game home stand. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM at Recreation Field in Montpelier. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
