No Long Wait for Win in Lake Elsinore

April 24, 2013 - California League (CalL1) - Lancaster JetHawks News Release

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - In 2012, the JetHawks needed until their 13th game in Lake Elsinore to get a win against the Storm on the road. In 2013, they got the first win out of the way in game one.

Kenny Long pitched out of a jam in the ninth inning and Lancaster held on for a 5-4 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm at The Diamond on Tuesday night.

Long picked up his first save of the season in his first appearance. He was activated from the disabled before the game. It was his first appearance for the JetHawks since he recorded the final out in the 2012 Cal League Championship Series.

Down a run heading into the ninth, Kyle Gaedele reached first on an infield single against tandem starter Chris Devenski. Manager Rodney Linares then made the call to the bullpen for the lefty Long with three left-handed batters due up.

Gaedele stole second and moved to third base when M.P. Cokinos' throw went into centerfield for an error. Long induced a game-ending fly out off the bat of Cory Spangenberg.

The Storm had inched closer and closer, scoring runs off Devenski in the seventh and eighth innings. The right-hander allowed a total two runs in his three innings of work.

He relieved starter Brady Rodgers (1-1) who picked up his first win of the season. Rodgers allowed two runs on five hits with four strike outs and a walk.

The JetHawks got on the board first against Storm ace Matt Wisler. With two men on and two outs in second, Cokinos hit a fly ball to right field that Yeison Asencio lost in the setting sun. The ball dropped in and both Preston Tucker and Chris Epps scored. Wisler had allowed a total of one run in his first three starts.

Lake Elsinore tied the game with a Luis Domoromo two-run double in the fourth inning off Rodgers.

The JetHawks jumped back on top in the sixth inning against reliever Matt Branham (0-2). Zach Johnson sacrificed runners to second and third with a bunt and then Tucker picked up an RBI with a ground ball and Telvin Nash, in his first game back off the disabled list, picked up a run with a single up the middle.

Lancaster (12-6) and Lake Elsinore (5-13) will play the second game of the three game series on Wednesday night at The Diamond. Tyson Perez and David Rollins will pitch for Lancaster. First pitch is 6:05 pm.
