Ninth inning rally falls short as Gnats drop fourth straight

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Sand Gnats hit a season high three home runs, two of them in the ninth inning Monday night. Unfortunately all of the long balls were solo shots as Savannah lost 6-5 to Augusta to match a season worst four-game losing streak.

Brian Peacock homered in consecutive at bats after taking a pitch off his hand in the fourth inning. He now leads the team with five homers. Dee Brown also went yard in the ninth for his second homer of the season. After the two homers, Francisco Plasencia singled up the middle to bring the winning run to the plate. With two outs John-Michael Howell struck out swinging after tweaking his left knee on the second strike.

Craig Stammen took the loss for Savannah and now falls to 0-6 in seven starts. He allowed just three earned runs in 5.0 innings of work. He struck out five and didn't walk anyone.

Stammen was outpitched by Augusta starter Ronnie Ray who threw just 87 pitches in eight innings of work. He gave up three Sand Gnats runs off of five hits.

Brian Milikan earned the save for Augusta despite giving up the two homers in the ninth.

The final game of this 12-game homestand will be Tuesday night. On the mound for Savannah will be righty Ricky Shefka (2-3, 5.40) against Augusta righty Dan Griffin (1-2, 3.33). For tickets and a complete schedule visit www.sandgnats.com or call the Sand Gnats offices at 912-351-9150.

Savannah has Wednesday off before leaving on an eight-game road trip. The Gnats will return home on Friday, May 19 for a four-game homestand against the Columbus Catfish.
