Nine Gulls Selected Through First 10 Rounds in MLB

NEWPORT, R.I. - Nine former Newport Gulls have been selected through the first two days of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Since 2013, 65 former Gulls have been drafted into the MLB.
Outfielder Quinn Brodey, a member of the Gulls in 2015, was selected by the New York Mets with the 97th overall pick in the third round. This past spring, Brodey led Stanford with a .314 batting average, 11 home runs, 51 RBI, and a .556 slugging percentage. With Newport during the 2015 New England Collegiate Baseball League season, Brodey batted .293 with four home runs while dominating on the mound, posting a 2.27 ERA through 31.2 innings pitched.
Joining Brodey from the 2015 roster is right-handed pitcher Colton Hock, who was drafted by the Miami Marlins with the 119th overall pick in the fourth round. Another Stanford product, Hock posted a 2.08 ERA in 47.2 innings pitched this spring. Leading Stanford in appearances, Hock logged 35 strikeouts as opponents hit .211 against him. In seven starts and nine appearances in the 2015 NECBL season, Hock recorded a 4.30 ERA over 37.2 innings pitched.
A two-year player in Newport during 2015 and 2016, left-handed pitcher Hunter Schryver was selected in the seventh round by the Tampa Bay Rays. At Villanova, Schryver led his team with 73.2 innings pitched and posted a team-best 2.44 ERA. For Newport in 2016, he went 6 - 1, throwing 43 innings with a 1.67 ERA and 49 strikeouts.
A member of last season's roster, right-hander Dennis Brady was a seventh-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Angels. At Mercer County Community College this season, Brady finished with a 0.96 ERA, throwing 84 innings with 118 strikeouts. With the Gulls in 2016, Brady tossed 13.2 innings while striking out 12 batters with a 4.61 ERA.
Ben Breazeale, a catcher who played in 24 games for Newport last year, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the seventh round. A First Team All-American selection by Collegiate Baseball, Breazeale batted .333 this season in 59 starts, clubbing 11 home runs and 51 RBI for Wake Forest. He also posted a .993 fielding percentage.
Playing for the Gulls in 2016, left-hander Andrew Gist was a ninth-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Rays. Gist posted a team-best 3.80 ERA in 73.1 innings pitched for Georgia this spring. In the NECBL last year, Gist went 5 - 3, tossing 53 innings and fanning 59 hitters en route to a 3.57 ERA.
Brett Hanewich, a right-handed pitcher on the 2014 Gulls, was also picked by the Tampa Bay Rays in the ninth round. In 27 innings pitched for Stanford this season, Hanewich had a 5.00 ERA with 26 strikeouts. During the 2014 NECBL campaign, he threw 44 innings and finished with a 3.27 ERA.
Selected in the ninth round by the Colorado Rockies was Sean Bouchard, an infielder on the 2015 Gulls. At UCLA, Bouchard made 57 starts this season, finishing with a .306 batting average while leading the team with 39 runs scored and nine home runs. Two years ago, Bouchard played in 25 games for Newport, blasting two home runs.
Right-handed pitcher James Karinchak, who played for Newport in 2015, was a ninth-round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians. A Second Team Louisville Slugger All-American during the 2016 season, Karinchak recorded a 3.65 ERA in 56.2 innings pitched at Bryant this year. For the Gulls, he logged a 0.72 ERA through 25 innings with 27 strikeouts.
