Cedar Rapids, IA - Nine former Cedar Rapids Kernels players are on five different World Baseball Classic teams when rosters were announced on February 8th.
The country with the most former Kernels on their WBC roster is Australia with four featuring pitchers Lachlan Wells (2016), Todd Van Steensel (2014) and Tim Atherton (2013); and infielder Logan Wade (2014).
Pitchers Dereck Rodriguez (2016) and Jose Berrios (2013) are on Puerto Rico's roster and pitcher Kuo Hua Lo is on Chinese Taipei's roster.
Two former Kernels that were here as part of the LA Angels affiliation are on WBC rosters. They are outfielder Frank De Jiuilo (2012) with Italy and infielder Efren Navarro (2008) with Mexico.
Overall, the Minnesota Twins have 10 players represented on various rosters in the World Baseball Classic, which begins pool play at four locations on March 6th. The 2017 World Baseball Classic final round will be held at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles March 20-22.
The Kernels open the 2017 Midwest League season at Beloit on Thursday, April 6th. They open the home season at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, April 8th vs. Beloit. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
