November 29, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release

The Charlotte Checkers today announced that they have signed forward Kris Newbury to a professional tryout contract. He will join the team as it begins a six-game road trip in Stockton on Wednesday.

Newbury, 34, began his 14th professional season in the ECHL with the Reading Royals, scoring three points (1g, 2a) in one game, before joining the Bakersfield Condors on a professional tryout contract on Oct. 19. With the Condors, Newbury scored five points (3g, 2a) in 14 games before the team released him on Monday.

Including this season's stint with the Condors, the 5-foot-11, 213-pound native of Brampton, Ontario, now has 567 points (191g, 376a) and 1,806 penalty minutes in 788 career AHL games with St. John's, Toronto, Hartford, Grand Rapids, Connecticut, Hershey, Adirondack, Ontario and Bakersfield. For his AHL career, Newbury ranks tied for 62nd in league history in points and is 41st in assists, each of which is the second-highest total among active players (Chris Bourque - Hershey). He is the league's active leader in games played and penalty minutes, ranking 40th and 14th on those all-time lists, respectively.

An AHL All Star in 2007, Newbury has also played 76 career NHL games with Toronto, Detroit, the New York Rangers and Philadelphia, scoring 10 points (4g, 6a) and amassing 139 penalty minutes. The San Jose Sharks selected him in the fifth round (139th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

As part of their upcoming road trip through California, the Checkers will play Newbury's most recent former team, Bakersfield, on Dec. 2 and Dec. 9.
