New York Red Bulls News Release

SECAUCUS, NJ (Monday, August 28, 2006) - New York Red Bulls forward Edson Buddle was named MLS Player of the Week for his efforts in the Red Bulls' 6-0 victory over Real Salt Lake at Giants Stadium on Saturday, August 26.

Buddle came into the game as a substitute at halftime for Chris Henderson and scored three goals within 18 minutes of play, recording his second career hat trick. The New Rochelle, NY native is now the Red Bulls' leading goal scorer with six and he also has three assists this season.

His first goal came in the 54th minute, when he knocked home a cross from Todd Dunivant, putting the Red Bulls up, 1-0. Buddle then doubled the hosts' lead seven minutes later when he got a head on a Marvell Wynne ball and directed it into the back of the net. That goal is one of four contenders for this week's Sierra Mist Goal of the Week. The forward completed his scoring in the 72nd minute when he was able to receive the ball in the right side of the penalty box, turn and fire a shot into the top corner.

This is the second time this year that a New York player has received Player of the Week honors. The first was former Red Bull Jean Philippe Peguero in Week 8, who helped lead his team with a hat trick of his own, past Chivas USA, 5-4, at Giants Stadium on May 20.

Buddle is in the midst of his first season with the Red Bulls after being acquired from the Columbus Crew on March 28, 2006 for Eddie Gaven and the rights to Chris Leitch. Career-wise, Buddle has scored 48 goals and 18 assists in six MLS seasons and the 25-year-old has averaged almost 10 goals per season over the past four years.

Buddle and the Red Bulls (6-7-10, 28 pts.) travel to Arrowhead Stadium on Wednesday, August 30, to face the Kansas City Wizards (8-12-5, 29 pts.). The game will be televised live on MSG starting at 8:30 p.m. ET.
