NBA D-League Update

April 20, 2012 - NBA G League (G League) News Release

UBILES NAMED ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

Edwin Ubiles needed a mulligan.

A four-year standout at Siena, who concluded his college career in 2010, Ubiles sat out what was to be his rookie season after having surgery to fix a stress fracture in his right tibia.

He split the fairway with his next drive, capturing 2012 NBA Development League Rookie of the Year honors as a member of the Dakota Wizards. The award recognizes the first-year professional who most significantly contributed to his team's success during the course of the season.

Ubiles, a 6-6, 204-pound forward, played in 41 regular season games, all starts, for the Wizards, averaging a team-high 19.6 points to go with 5.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.0 steals and 34.3 minutes. He led the team in scoring 17 times, scoring in double figures 39 times. He scored an NBA D-League career-high 41 points on 18-of-26 shooting on Feb. 28 to defeat the Iowa Energy 127-110 in Bismarck.

A 2012 NBA D-League All-Star, Ubiles earned a GATORADE Call-Up to the Washington Wizards, becoming the first Siena player to see NBA minutes. In four NBA games this season, he averaged 3.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 13.0 minutes. In two postseason games for the Wizards, Ubiles averaged 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 30.5 minutes as Dakota fell to the Bakersfield Jam in the first round of the 2012 NBA D-League Playoffs presented by BBVA.

"Edwin had an impressive first season in Dakota this year," said Chris Alpert, Vice President of Operations and Player Personnel for the NBA D-League. "His skills as a 2012 NBA D-League All-Star and GATORADE Call-Up speak for themselves -- he is one of the brightest young prospects in our league. I congratulate him on a memorable start to his professional career."

Ubiles joins DeShawn Sims (Maine, 2010-11), Cleveland Cavaliers guard Alonzo Gee (Austin, 2009-10), Othyus Jeffers (Iowa, 2008-09), Utah Jazz guard Blake Ahearn (Dakota, 2007-08), Indiana Pacers forward Louis Amundson (Colorado, 2006-07), Detroit Pistons guard Will Bynum (Roanoke 2005-06), James Thomas (Roanoke 2004-05), Desmond Penigar (Asheville, 2003-04), Devin Brown (Fayetteville, 2002-03) and Fred House (Charleston, 2001-02) as winners of the annual award.

PROSPECT REPORT

Mardy Collins, Los Angeles D-Fenders -- The allure was understandable. Big point guards have always captured the attention of NBA scouts, and Collins, at 6-6, is pretty gosh, darn big. Selected by the New York Knicks in the first round (29th overall) of the 2006 NBA Draft, Collins had some decent moments with the Knicks early on, and then was shipped to the L.A. Clippers as part of the Zach Randolph trade in November 2008. After two seasons with the Clippers, Collins fell out of the NBA. In 28 games with the D-Fenders this season, Collins averaged 10.0 points, 4.6 assists and 3.6 rebounds. Coaches have always liked his size, defense, toughness and versatility. As the NBA has loosened up in recent years, teams have placed more of a premium on bringing in speed, quickness, shooting and scoring ability in the backcourt, regardless of size. Still, at 27, Collins still has time to make another run at the NBA.

Today's Quote

NBA Commissioner DAVID STERN, on the mission of the NBA Development League: "Our goal is to give players who think they are a step away from the NBA a reason not to go to Europe. It's giving us the basis of a hard-earned minor league that not only is good for our basketball, which is really what it's all about, but also is good for getting attention to the game itself."
