Nationals Shoot Down Pelicans 6-3

August 3, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release

Woodbridge, VA- The Potomac Nationals (68-41, 26-14) completed a series sweep of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (63-47, 23-18) on Saturday night at Pfitzner Stadium as Nationals LHP Matt Purke earned his second win with the P-Nats.

Potomac has now won five consecutive series.

Purke (2-3), the winning pitcher, dealt 6.0 innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits without walking a batter and striking out four.

The Pelicans plated the first run of the contest on a 4-6-3 double play in the 1st inning off the bat of LF Trever Adams, who swept into three twin killings in the three game series.

Myrtle Beach padded their 1-0 lead with an individual run in the 4th after a leadoff double for 1B Joe Maloney, who scored on a unique 3-4-3 RBI groundout for RF Jake Skole.

The Nationals plated their first run of the game in the 4th via an RBI triple blasted to right center field by LF Brandon Miller off former Washington Nationals farmhand, Myrtle Beach RHP Kevin Pucetas (0-1), the losing pitcher.

Pucetas, a knuckleballer, surrendered six earned runs on ten base hits, including a pair of home runs, while walking one and fanning a pair.

The P-Nats took a 3-2 advantage on an RBI double blooped into right center field by 3B Cutter Dykstra and then as the result of a controversial call. Potomac CF Michael Taylor cranked a deep drive to the right field corner and the blast appeared to hit the base of the right field foul pole for a home run. Base Umpire J.J. January ruled that the ball hit underneath the pole and thus was a live ball off the wall. Taylor was thrown out at home plate 9-3-2 after driving home Dykstra.

Three more runs were caked on for the Nationals in the 6th on back-to-back jacks. 1B Kevin Keyes cranked a two-run blast way out to left field and Miller belted a solo shot, his first home run as a member of the Potomac Nationals.

Nationals RHP Robert Benincasa (12 SV) garnered his twelfth save of the campaign and punctuating the win by striking out the side. Skole waved swinging, 2B Edwin Garcia went down watching, and CF Chris Grayson threw his stick through strike three.

The Potomac Nationals gave out the Roger Bernadina "Shark-A-rine" figure to the first 1,000 fans sponsored by: Little Caesars Team Dumfries & Haymarket.

The Shark-A-rine was distributed to all fans in less than nine minutes from the time gates to Pfitzner Stadium opened at 5:00pm.

After an off day on Sunday, the Nationals begin a six-game road trip to face the Carolina Mudcats (Cleveland Indians) and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Texas Rangers).

Pitching matchups are to be determined.

The Potomac Nationals Baseball Network will begin streaming Monday evening with the P-Nats Lead-Off Show at 7:00pm in preparation for the live play-by-play broadcast beginning at 7:15pm. Broadcast coverage of Potomac Nationals Baseball is accessible by heading to www.potomacnationals.com.
