Nash's Homer Propels Dash in Doubleheader Opener

August 11, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Telvin Nash's three-run homer, his second in as many games, sparked Winston-Salem's 6-2 victory over Carolina in the opener of Thursday's doubleheader at BB&T Ballpark.

Nash has delivered five hits and seven RBIs in the first two games of this series after entering in the midst of a 2-for-26 slump. Signed before the start of the second half, Nash has already surged within one homer of the club's lead in the category with 11.

One game after plating eight in the first, Winston-Salem (21-25, 49-67) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame thanks to the top two hitters in the Carolina League. Mason Robbins, who entered with the circuit's best batting average at .315, laced a two-out double to left before Nick Basto, one spot behind Robbins at .314, muscled an RBI single to shallow right.

Robbins registered an RBI groundout before Nash's homer in Winston-Salem's four-run third, which proved to be the difference in the contest. Ryan Leonards' bases-loaded walk in the fifth capped the Dash's scoring.

On the hill, starter Robinson Leyer worked into the fifth inning and gave up just two runs. Connor Walsh (2-2) replaced Leyer, who loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth, and was able to strand two of those three runners.

Walsh struck out five, tied for the most by a Winston-Salem reliever this year, over two shutout innings before Jacob Morris spun a 1-2-3 seventh to cap the victory.

Carolina (15-31, 44-72) tallied a run in the fourth and fifth, but the Mudcats issued nine walks and went 2-for-10 with men in scoring position.

The Dash searches for its second series sweep of the season in Thursday's doubleheader finale, which will begin at approximately 8 p.m. The Dash send right-hander Kelvis Valerio (3-4, 4.32 ERA) to the hill against fellow right-hander Zach Quintana (1-5, 5.45 ERA). This seven-inning finale can be heard live on 600 AM-WSJS and wsjs.com, with coverage also available on MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App.

#YourHomeTeam has just six home games remaining. The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark on Friday, August 19, for the first of three with the Salem Red Sox. The series opener includes a postgame fireworks show, presented by Image 360. For tickets, call the Baker Roofing Box Office at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
