Wheeling Nailers News Release

ELMIRA, NY - On Friday night, the Wheeling Nailers turned in a solid performance on the road, playing well in all three zones against the Elmira Jackals. Four different players lit the lamp, while Franky Palazzese made 42 saves in a 4-1 Wheeling triumph at First Arena.

For the first time in six games, the Nailers opened the scoring, and they did so in the quickest fashion this season, needing just 63 seconds to accomplish the task. Matt Tabrum carried the puck in on the left side of the offensive zone, before hammering on the brakes, as his teammates joined the rush. The late man in was Danny Fick, who took a feed from Tabrum, skated a stride in, and ripped a wrist shot into the left side of the cage.

Early tallies were the themes of the first two periods, as the Jackals got the equalizer just 18 seconds into the middle frame. Allan McPherson chased down a loose puck in the right corner, dipping a pass back to Guy LeBoeuf at the blueline. LeBeouf skated toward the center of the ice, before wristing the puck into the slot. Chris Langkow ended up gathering in the biscuit, setting up Cason Hohmann for a tap-in on the left side of the crease. Wheeling regained the advantage with 4:55 left in the stanza, while playing 4-on-4. Mathew Maione created the play, as he curled out of the left corner with the puck, before sliding a pass to Cody Wydo in the slot. Wydo's one-timer eluded CJ Motte for a 2-1 Nailers lead. Jarrett Burton also assisted on the go-ahead goal for his team-leading 34th point of the campaign.

The Nailers finished off the victory in style, adding two insurance goals in the third period. The first one came at the 6:40 mark, when Andrew Cerretani led a rush on the left side of the offensive zone. Cerretani dropped a pass to Patrick McGrath, whose shot from the slot was stopped, but the rebound was pounded in by Chris Ciotti, who made his Wheeling debut. 36 seconds later, Matt Tabrum punctuated the 4-1 win with an unassisted tally.

Franky Palazzese was fabulous in goal for the Nailers, as he denied 42 of the 43 shots he faced for his 30th win in a Wheeling uniform. CJ Motte took the loss for Elmira, allowing four goals on 24 shots.

The Nailers and Jackals will meet again on Saturday at 7:05, as Wheeling continues its four-game road trip. The Nailers will play two home games next weekend on Friday and Saturday, both against Reading. The weekend starts with a Flat Screen Friday, presented by The Highlands and Bordas & Bordas, in addition to a Frosty Friday. Saturday's game is Pittsburgh Steelers Night, starring Brett Keisel.
