WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce their tenth player signing of the 2016 offseason. Wheeling has signed goaltender Doug Carr to an ECHL contract.

Carr, 27, will be entering his third full season of professional hockey, after spending time in both the AHL and ECHL to begin his career. Last year, Doug spent the majority of the campaign with the Manchester Monarchs, turning in a 10-8-5 record, a 2.77 goals against average, and a .915 save percentage. He was also between the pipes for four of the team's five postseason contests. Carr turned in big performances in games when he saw a lot of action, as he posted a 7-3-3 mark in tilts when he made at least 30 saves, including a 42-stop performance in a 4-1 victory at Elmira on January 9th.

"Doug Carr is a proven goaltender at the ECHL level, who also has AHL experience, which adds great depth to our organization in the crease," said Nailers Head Coach Jeff Christian. "He understands his role and expectations, comes highly recommended by the Pittsburgh staff, and will provide a reliable veteran presence."

One year earlier, the Hanover, Massachusetts native split his season between the ECHL's Colorado Eagles and AHL's Adirondack Flames, combining to go 14-13-0. Overall, Doug has played in 18 AHL games to complement his 46 ECHL contests, suiting up with the Abbotsford Heat and Albany Devils, in addition to Adirondack. His time with the Heat came shortly after his NCAA career came to an end, and included one playoff appearance, as he made 13 saves in relief of Joni Ortio against Grand Rapids.

"It was a pretty easy choice for me to want to come to Wheeling, as the team has a great track record of developing players, while building a winning tradition," Carr said. "I know three players from last year's team, and they couldn't say enough about how much they enjoy the staff, the city, and the organization."

Prior to his advancement to the pro game, Carr attended UMass Lowell, where he majored in Business Administration, while playing four years of college hockey for the River Hawks. After a frustrating freshman campaign, Doug put together a solid sophomore season, going 22-10-1, with a 2.13 goals against average, and .928 save percentage, while helping to bring UMass Lowell to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1996. The tandem of Carr and Connor Hellebuyck led the River Hawks to the national stage in each of the next two years, including a trip to the Frozen Four at Consol Energy Center in 2013. The netminder completed his scholastic career with a record of 42-33-7 in 86 games.
