Nailers Fall 5-4 In Shootout

November 8, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

The Wheeling Nailers remained the lone team in the ECHL with zero regulation losses as they recorded a conference leading 13th standings point in a shootout loss to the Mississippi Wolves 5-4. The Nailers are 5-0-3 with their 2nd consecutive shootout-loss while the Mississippi Sea Wolves improve to 4-4-1.

Nick Johnson led the Nailers attack with his 8th and 9th goals of the year including a shorthanded breakaway tally and also scored the Nailers lone goal in the shootout. Johnson is 2nd in the league in goals.

David Brown made some spectacular saves between the pipes for the Nailers among his 38 total in getting the team the standings point as his record goes to 2-0-1.

Elgin Reid scored his 2nd of the year also shorthanded on a fine drop by October's ECHL player of the month Tommy Goebel and Aaron Clarke also scored his 6th of the year.

The Nailers went 0-for-5 on the power play ending a streak of 6 consecutive games with at least 1 PPG. Mississippi was 1-for-6 on the power play but allowed 2 Nailer shorthanded goals. Mississippi outshot the Nailers 43-39 on the night including 21 Sea wolves shots against Brown in the 2nd period.

Wheeling became the second team in the ECHL to score 2 shorthanded goals in a single game this year (Cincinnati is the other) and they are now tied for the lead with 3 total.

Former Wheeling Nailer Jason Tejchma was among the goal scorers for the Sea wolves. Tejchma played in 5 games with the Nailers last year.

Frederick Cabana scored Mississippi's 4th goal in regulation and also flipped the game-winning goal of the shootout past David Brown on the far side after crossing the crease from his left to right.

Wheeling took a quick 1-0 lead at 3:18 of the 1st period when Tommy Goebel rushed forward on a shorthanded attack and seemed to blindly drop it for the trailing Elgin Reid between the circles who slammed it home. It was Reid's 4th of the year. Jordan Morrison also assisted on the goal.

Mississippi took less than a minute to tie it when Jeremy Hall lit the lamp at 4:06. Tejchma gave the Sea Wolves the lead at 10:20 on a scramble in front of the goal. Brown made the initial save but the rebound hung in mid-air for Tejchma to whack it into the net.

Wheeling would light the lamp again shorthanded at 12:30 to tie it at 2-2. Nick Johnson intercepted a pass in his own zone and raced all the way down ice to slip in between the legs of Sea Wolves goalie Ryan Munce.

Mississippi would score the first 2 goals of the 2nd period to take a 4-2 lead at 8:54 and 11:57 by Ryan Cruthers and Frederick Cabana. The Nailers battled back in the closing minutes of the 2nd to tie it. Nick Johnson pulled the Nailers to within 4-3 as Bryan Ewing and Jordan Morrison would set him up on his 2nd goal of the night at 16:09.

Rob Sirianni fired a nice pass from the left wing wall to the awaiting Aaron Clarke who converted on the one-timer for his 6th of the year at 18:41 for the last goal either team would score before the shootout.
