Nailers Announce 2016-17 Regular Season Schedule

April 28, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have announced their schedule for the 2016-17 regular season. The 25th season of professional hockey in Wheeling will consist of 27 weekend dates on home ice, including New Year's Eve, and 16 different opponents, including the first ever match-ups against the Idaho Steelheads.

For the third time in four years, the season will begin on home ice, as the Nailers will get to begin their 25th season in front of their fans on Saturday, October 15th against the Brampton Beast at 7:05. It will be the second straight season that Brampton visits for the home opener.

The second game of the regular season will be the first postseason rematch, as the Nailers will welcome the Reading Royals to WesBanco Arena on October 20th. That will be followed two days later by the first of two trips to Cincinnati, where Wheeling will play its first road game on the 22nd. October will conclude with a home-and-home series against the Kalamazoo Wings.

November starts with six straight games against familiar foes, as the Nailers will open with a home-and-home series against the Toledo Walleye, followed by games against Kalamazoo, Reading, and two against Brampton. November 15th against the Beast will be the third straight Education Day Game, starting at 11:05. This season, a crowd of 5,511 witnessed a five-goal explosion in 4:10, as Wheeling rallied to stun Cincinnati, 7-5. The Nailers will take their first multi-game road trip on the 18th, 19th, and 20th, with one game at Indy and two against Quad City. Thanksgiving Weekend will feature a two-game series in the Ohio Valley on the 26th and 27th against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. That month ends with a Wednesday clash in Reading.

The third month of the campaign opens with a bit of a twist, as the Utah Grizzlies come to town for the second time in three years, playing two games at WesBanco Arena on December 2nd and 3rd. The following weekend will be spent in Brampton, before the team returns to play its lone home contests of the season against the Orlando Solar Bears (14th) and Fort Wayne Komets (16th). The Nailers will travel to Fort Wayne on the 17th to complete one of seven home-and-home sets. Wheeling will be at home before the holidays, welcoming in the Manchester Monarchs on December 20th, and the Cincinnati Cyclones on the 22nd. When they return from the break, the squad will visit Toledo and Reading, before returning to home ice for New Year's Eve against the Elmira Jackals.

The 2017 calendar year will begin with three games on home ice, as the Walleye pay a visit on January 6th and 11th, sandwiched around a tilt with the Cyclones on the 8th. Wheeling and Toledo will do battle at Huntington Center on the 13th, before a two-game set against Kalamazoo on the 14th and 16th. The latter is an afternoon road affair on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. January 20th will be the lone meeting between the Nailers and Norfolk Admirals, which will occur in Virginia. Wheeling will be in Reading the following night. The Nailers will then conclude January with four games in five days, hosting Toledo, Quad City, and Brampton, before traveling to Kalamazoo.

The lightest home month will be February, as the Nailers will play in front of their home fans four times, while appearing in enemy territory on nine different occasions. After visits to Cincinnati and Kalamazoo, as well as a home date with Reading, Wheeling will make its way to Boise, Idaho for the first time ever, as the Nailers will battle the Steelheads on the 8th, 10th, and 11th. Next up will be the other three games at WesBanco Arena, on the 15th and 17th against the Beast, and the 18th against the K-Wings. Monday, February 20th will be another day game on the road, as the puck will drop at 2:00 in Brampton. That afternoon will be the first of seven straight away from the Wheel, leading into early March.

The schedules to end February and start March are similar, as back-to-back weekends will be spent on the road in Toledo, Fort Wayne, and Indy. When the local club returns home, it will do so for a three-game weekend on March 10th, 11th, and 12th. The opponents will be the Quad City Mallards for two, followed by the rival Walleye for one. The middle of the month will also feature the lone trip to New York, as the Nailers will face Elmira and Adirondack twice each. Idaho will then return the favor from February, by traveling to West Virginia for games on the 22nd, 24th, and 25th. The final game of March is on the 31st at home against the Beast.

April begins with a Saturday off, and that is not an April Fool's Joke, even though that date happens to be April 1st. Wheeling will be home on the 2nd to take on Reading, then at Brampton on the 5th. The regular season home finale takes place on Friday, April 7th against the Wings, and similar to this season, it will be a home-and-home series, which ends in Kalamazoo the next night.

The 2015-16 home schedule consists of 11 games each on Fridays and Saturdays, in addition to five on Sundays, making up 27 of the 36 home dates. There will be nine midweek games, including Education Day, and two leading up to the holidays. The opposition breakdown is as follows: Brampton 11 (6H, 5A), Kalamazoo 10 (5H, 5A), Toledo 10 (5H, 5A), Reading 7 (4H, 3A), Idaho 6 (3H, 3A), Quad City 5 (3H, 2A), Fort Wayne 5 (1H, 4A), Cincinnati 4 (2H, 2A), Elmira 3 (1H, 2A), Greenville 2 (2H), Utah 2 (2H), Adirondack 2 (2A), Indy 2 (2A), Manchester 1 (1H), Orlando 1 (1H), and Norfolk 1 (1A).

Game times experienced a bit of a change as well. Weekday home games will remain at 7:05 (unless noted) and Friday home games will continue to start at 7:35. However, Saturday home games will now take place at 7:05, and Sunday games at WesBanco Arena will see the puck drop at 5:05.
