A Perfect Homestand

The Wheeling Nailers finished off a perfect season opening three-game homestand on Thursday night, when they held off the Toledo Walleye, 3-2 in a shootout. Wheeling opened the season with back-to-back victories against the Reading Royals, winning 7-3 on Friday, before a 3-2 shootout win on Saturday. In Thursday night's contest, the Nailers jumped out to a 2-0 lead, on goals by Cody Wild and Peter Merth, only to watch the Walleye even the score later in the opening frame. However, for the second game in a row, the home team was able to snag the victory, thanks to phenomenal goaltending by Patrick Killeen, who made 19 saves during the game, before a 5-for-5 effort in the shootout. Killeen has now stopped ten straight shootout shots.

Exploring a New World

On Friday night, the Nailers will play their first ever game in the State of Indiana, when they clash with the Evansville IceMen at Ford Center. This will be the first of three games this season between Wheeling and Evansville, who will face each other twice at WesBanco Arena. The IceMen are currently in their fifth season of existence, but first in the ECHL, after spending one season in the All American Hockey Association, one season in the All American Hockey League, and most recently, two years in the Central Hockey League. After posting an 84-point season a year ago, the transition to the ECHL has been less than friendly thus far for Evansville, as it enters Friday with a mark of 0-6-0-1.

Turning Defense into Offense

Both of the Nailers' goals on Thursday night came from the blueline, as Cody Wild and Peter Merth both lit the lamp during the first period of the team's 3-2 win over Toledo. Wild also had an assist on Thursday, giving him two goals, six assists, and eight points in seven games on the season. The six assists and eight points are the most on the club, and the eight points also place him in a tie for second place among defensemen in the ECHL. Merth's marker was his first of the season, and fifth as a member of the Nailers. Despite being held scoreless on Thursday, blueliner Paul Cianfrini checks in with four points in his last three tilts.

They Like the Central

Prior to Friday night, the last time the Nailers played a game in the Central Time Zone was March 14th of last season, when they played the second of two road games against the Chicago Express. Oddly enough, the Express were affiliated with the Columbus Blue Jackets at the time, and since then, Columbus has signed an affiliation agreement with the Evansville IceMen. The St. Louis Blues also share an affiliation with Evansville. The coincedence doesn't stop there, as the goaltender for the March 14th game was Rob Madore, who spent time with both Chicago and South Carolina, after completing his college career at the University of Vermont. Where is Madore now? Tending goal for the Evansville IceMen.

Hockey Genes in the Gens Family

Evansville's blueline is paced by a pair of brothers, as Aaron and Matt Gens have combined for four assists in the team's first seven contests. Matt, 29, is the oldest brother, and was selected in the ninth round (278th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. This is his seventh professional season, and second in the ECHL, after recording 22 points in 35 games with the Elmira Jackals during the 2007-08 campaign. Aaron, 25, is playing in his first full season, after graduating from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. The younger Gens did appear in seven games with the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters at the end of the 2011-12 season, dishing out two assists.

NEXT HOME GAME: Wed . Nov 7t h - 7:00PM
