Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC --- Matt Klinker and three Carolina relievers combined on a five-hit shutout of the Chattanooga Lookouts as the Mudcats snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory at Five County Stadium on Wednesday night.

Klinker (W, 2-3), who had received one total run over his last four starts, threw six-plus shutout innings, fanning seven and retired the first 11 batters of the game. The Mudcats (8-18) took an early lead for Klinker when Chris Denove grounded a single to center to score Denis Phipps from second base. A throwing error by Lookouts shortstop Dee Gordon allowed another Carolina run in the third, then Klinker delivered his second professional hit off of the glove of first baseman Anthony Hatch with two outs to drive home Denove.

All three of Carolina's runs scored with two outs, while the pitching staff did not walk a single batter in the game.

Joe Krebs relieved Klinker with two on and none out in the seventh, but escaped the jam on a flyout and line drive double play to third base off of pinch-hitter Corey Smith's bat. From there Ruben Medina and Jordan Smith (S, 3) threw a scoreless inning apiece to close out the victory.

Carolina had nine hits, with Denove and Phipps collecting two apiece. The shutout victory was Carolina's second of the season.

The Mudcats' five-game homestand continues Thursday night with Dallas Buck (2-3) opposing Alberto Bastardo at 7:15 PM ET.
