Carolina Mudcats News Release

ZEBULON, NC - Wes Parsons pitched through seven with a season high seven strikeouts, but the Pelicans scored once against him in the fourth and later added one more in the tenth while defeating the Mudcats 2-1 in ten on Wednesday night in Zebulon.

The Pelicans (73-55, 37-21) clinched a playoff berth with the win, while the Mudcats (45-83, 16-42) suffered their eighth straight loss and fell to 3-18 in August.

David Bote was 2-for-4 for Myrtle Beach and broke a no-hit bid from Parsons with a RBI single in the fourth. His run scoring hit scored Charcer Burks in the fourth after Parsons walked him to start the inning. Bote also scored once and drove in one while helping lead the Pelicans to the playoff spot-clinching win.

Parsons was perfect through three and struck out five of the first nine he faced in Wednesday's game. In all, Parsons struck out seven, walked one, allowed two hits and gave up just the one run over seven complete innings.

Sean McLaughlin later worked through a scoreless eighth, and Chad Sobotka struck out one while holding the Pelicans scoreless in the ninth. Zach Quintana (1-6, 5.18) then pitched the final frame for the Mudcats and took the loss after allowing two hits, one run and one walk in the tenth.

Daniel Lewis earned the win after leaving two on in the ninth and getting out of a jam in the tenth. He started the tenth by allowing a single to Tanner Murphy and then walked Braxton Davidson before Sean Godfrey moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Lewis (4-0, 3.28) eventually got out of the inning and won the game by retiring Murphy at the plate and after getting Jordan Edgerton to fly out. Murphy tried to score on a wild pitch (on an intentional walk attempt) let loose by Lewis, but was caught at home for the inning's second out.

Carolina's lone run of the game came in the fifth against starter Preston Morrison and was driven in by Travis Demeritte who finished 2-for-5 for Carolina in the loss. Demeritte doubled in Luis Valenzuela in the fifth to tie the game, but Morrison and the Pelicans' bullpen kept Carolina scoreless the rest of the way.

Morrison worked through five innings and finished with one run allowed on six hits. He also struck out five and walked one. Erick Leal pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh before leaving the game in the eighth with one man on base. Tommy Nance stranded the runner he inherited from Leal and went on to pitch through a scoreless frame. Lewis inherited two from Nance in the ninth, but left both men on base.

Carolina was 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position in Wednesday's loss and stranded 12 men on base. The Pelicans were just 2-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left three men on.

Myrtle Beach took a two games to none lead in the series and will play for the sweep on Thursday night at Five County Stadium. Thursday's series finale will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Zebulon.
