Mudcats Deal Dash First Sweep Since 2011
April 7, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
The Dash suffered their first sweep since July 9-11 of 2011 thanks to Carolina's 6-2 victory over Winston-Salem Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium.
Winston-Salem (0-3) had not begun a season with three straight losses since the 2005 season, during which the club still went on to win 77 games. The Dash only mustered six runs on 16 hits during the Mudcats' three-game sweep, and the club collectively went 3-for-18 with runners in scoring position.
Chris Beck (0-1) did not allow an earned run in his High-A debut, but he suffered the loss thanks to three unearned runs in the home half of the fifth. Jerrud Sabourin reached on a two-base error by Joey DeMichele to kick off the frame, and Joey Wendle brought him home with a single.
Later in the frame, Tyler Naquin and Francisco Lindor plated runs with a groundout and double, respectively, and the Mudcats had a lead that they would not relinquish. Beck worked four and two-thirds and allowed those three unearned runs on four hits. The 10th-best prospect in the White Sox system according to Baseball America struck out three and walked three in his first start of the season.
After Carolina extended its lead to four runs in the sixth, the Dash responded with a single tally in the seventh and eighth. Chris Curley clubbed a solo shot to right-center to get the Dash on the board, and Kevan Smith and Mark Haddow strung together consecutive two-out doubles in the eighth.
However, Joey Wendle's two-run bomb in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Jeremy Erban put the game away for good.
Winston-Salem will have Monday off before heading to Frederick for a three-game series Tuesday through Thursday. Right-hander Terance Marin will make his first career minor league start in the series opener Tuesday at 7 p.m. The undefeated Keys will counter with fellow righty Zachary Davies. Pregame coverage on wsdash.com begins at 6:45 p.m.
The Dash's home opener is this Friday at 7 p.m. against Carolina, and a limited number of tickets are still available. Call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com for more information.
