Maine Celtics News Release

PORTLAND, ME - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Quirk Chevrolet, and the Maine Recreation and Park Association (MRPA) today announced the Red Claws will be the presenting sponsor of the state-wide Hot Shots program. The announcement was made today by Maine Red Claws President and General Manager Jon Jennings and MRPA President Cindy Hazelton, CPRP at a press conference held at South Portland Community Center Gym.

"The Maine Red Claws made a commitment to be an active and involved participant in our community," said Jennings. "This program enables us to reach out to every child in the state of Maine through their town recreation department. The MRPA/Red Claws Hot Shot Competition is a fun way to encourage kids to lead an active lifestyle, and when we were first approached to become associated with the program, we knew we wanted to be an active and involved participant."

The MRPA/Red Claws Hot Shot Competition is an opportunity for children ages 9-18 to test their skills against competitors from across the state. The Hot Shot Competition involves shooting from five "hot spots" marked on one end of the basketball court and tests participants' speed, shooting, dribbling and rebounding ability. Each Maine parks and recreation department can host a local competition, with the winners going on to compete in regional competitions. The regional winners are then invited to compete in the State Finals, which will be hosted by the Red Claws on March 7, 2010 prior to the team's 5 PM game versus the Sioux Falls Skyforce at 5 PM.

"We are thrilled with the Maine Red Claws involvement with the Hot Shots program," Hazelton said. "As the team enters their inaugural season, we know that the interest in basketball will only increase in a state that already loves the sport. We hope that their involvement results in an increase in the number of parks and recreation departments that participate in the Hot Shots Competition."
