Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The New York Yankees have announced that RHP Sean Carley has been called up to High-A Tampa on Friday, becoming the fourteenth RiverDogs pitcher to advance up to the higher levels of the Yankees system this season.
Carley, 25, joins twelve former RiverDogs that all spent time in the Lowcountry in 2016 with eleven members of Charleston's pitching staff now at either the Class A Advanced or Double-A levels.
"It's a testament to these guys, the hard work they put in, the preparation that they put in to give themselves an opportunity to be successful each time they take the mound," said RiverDogs Pitching Coach Justin Pope of this year's call ups. "But also, it's a testament to the organization for putting them in a position to be successful and help them move up."
In his second season with the RiverDogs after being promoted from Extended Spring Training on June 14, Carley went 0-1 with a career-low 2.28 ERA. The native of Melbourne, Florida punched out out 22 batters with nine walks across 27.2 innings of work with opponents hitting just .204 against him. Carley posted scoreless outings in eight of his 11 outings and went on a 12 inning consecutive scoreless streak from June 24-July 29 in his most dominant stretch.
"He works hard, goes about his business in a professional way, and has an idea of how to pitch," said Pope. "He throws the ball over for strikes and never gives in."
Originally selected in the 14th round of the 2014 draft by the Yankees, Carley spent the majority of the 2015 campaign with the RiverDogs. With Charleston, the right hander accrued a 3-1 record with a 3.86 ERA with 40 Ks across 49 innings across 28 appearances out of the bullpen. The ex-Mountaineer made his debut in the Gulf Coast League in 2014 before a call up to Staten Island to combine for a 5.19 ERA in his rookie season.
In a corresponding move, RHP Greg Weissert was reinstated to the RiverDogs roster after a paper move that placed him on Short Season Staten Island's roster on Thursday.
With their retooled roster, the RiverDogs begin a weeklong homestand, first taking on the Greenville Drive, the Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, in a four-game series beginning on Friday night at 7:05 pm. RHP Daris Vargas (9-6, 2.95) will take to the hill for Charleston while being opposed by RHP Daniel Gonzalez (3-4, 4.52) for the Drive. The game will be broadcast on WTMA 1250 AM and online streaming at riverdogs.com and the TuneIn Radio App.
Ticket information for the RiverDogs homestand and any of the remaining home games can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com. Tickets for Game Two of the SAL Divisional Series on Friday, September, 9 at 7:05pm are now available. Those that can't make it to the park can follow every pitch of the RiverDogs season on WTMA 1250 AM and streaming online at riverdogs.com.
