Mountaineers Use Extras to Get past Plymouth

PLYMOUTH, Mass. - The Vermont Mountaineers edged the Plymouth Pilgrims, 7-5, in extra inning New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Forges Field on Sunday night.

With the win, Vermont improves to 23-15 overall, increasing its lead in the Northern Division to two games over second place Laconia. Plymouth falls to 16-21 on the summer.

The Mountaineers concluded the four-game road trip with a 2-2 mark.

With the score tied at five and one out in the top of the tenth, third baseman Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) reached on an error. Rightfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) followed with an infield single that rolled into the base of right field. The roll allowed Clemons to reach third to set the scene at first and third with one out. Leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) laid down a squeeze bunt to score Clemons from third and move Parenty to second with two outs. The play gave the Mountaineers a 6-5 lead. First baseman Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) reached on an error that allowed Parenty to score an insurance run from second and make it 7-5.

The Mountaineers took an immediate 2-0 lead in the first inning, all of which started with two outs. Dudek smacked a single and moved to second on a wild pitch before catcher Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) ripped an RBI double to provide Vermont with a 1-0 advantage. Shortstop Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) connected with an RBI single to score Smith and put the Mountaineers up 2-0.

The Pilgrims answered with one run in the bottom of the first, but the Mountaineers responded with two more runs in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead. Parenty led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ruppert followed with a walk, as did Dudek, to load the bases with no one out. Smith then whacked a two RBI single to give the Mountaineers the 4-1 edge.

Three runs by Plymouth in the fifth knotted the score at four. The Pilgrims took a brief lead, at 5-4, when they scored a run in the seventh, but Vermont answered with a run in the top of the eighth. Centerfielder Laren Eustace (Batavia, Ill. / Indiana) led off the inning with a single. He stole second and moved to third on an errant throw before scoring on a Parenty sacrifice fly to tie the game at five.

Sean Callahan (Colchester, Vt. / UMass-Dartmouth) started for Vermont and took a no decision. The righthander dealt five innings, giving up four runs (all earned) on four hits and two walks. He struck out one.

Plymouth starter Mike Lundin (Kingston, Mass. / Franklin Pierce) lasted four innings and allowed four runs (all earned) on six hits and three walks. He struck out six.

Closer Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) earned the win for Vermont to improve to 2-1 on the summer. The righthander hurled two innings of relief, allowing no runs on one hit and no walks. He struck out three.

Reliever Luke Olson (Silver Springs, Mass. / George Washington) was charged with the loss for Plymouth, falling to 1-1. Olson tossed three innings and gave up three unearned runs on four hits and no walks. He struck out two.

The Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday night, when they host the Valley Blue Sox for a 6:30 p.m. contest at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
