Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers upended the Keene Swamp Bats, 5-0, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) play at Recreation Field on Friday night. With the win, the Mountaineers have clinched the Number 1 seed in the Northern Division heading into the 2015 postseason.

The Mountaineers now sit at 25-16 entering the final day of the regular season. The Swamp Bats drop to 12-29 with the loss.

Vermont scored one run in the second to take an early lead and never looked back. Shortstop Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) smacked a one out single and subsequently stole second. Two batters later and with two outs, second baseman Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) connected with an RBI single to right-center to score Pasteur and give the Mountaineers the 1-0 edge.

In the fifth, Vermont tacked on two more runs. Copeland led off with a single, his second base knock of a team-high four hit effort. After he stole second, rightfielder Laren Eustace (Batavia, Ill. / Indiana) reached on a bunt single to move Copeland to third. Centerfielder Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla. / Eastern Michigan) then grounded out to score Copeland from third and put the Mountaineers up 2-0. Eustace advanced to second on the play. After another ground out moved Eustace to third, he scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-0.

In the sixth, the Mountaineers put the game out of reach with two more runs. Third baseman Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) hit a one out single. Pasteur followed with a hit-and-run single, moving Smith to third, to setup first and third with one out. Pasteur stole second before Copeland cranked a two out two RBI single to break the game open and cap off the scoring for the night, at 5-0.

Four different Vermont pitchers combined to toss a three-hitter. Southpaw Garrison Banas (Hadley, Mass. / Bryant) hurled four innings, allowing no runs on two hits and two walks. He struck out seven. In the predetermined abbreviated start, Banas earned the win to improve to 1-3 on the summer.

Lefthander Teddy Rodliff (West Babylon, N.Y. / Stony Brook) entered the game in relief in the fifth inning and dealt three shutout innings. He gave up just one hit and no walks. He struck out three.

Sean Callahan (Colchester, Vt. / UMass-Dartmouth) and Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) pitched the final two innings. Neither allowed a hit. Delaplane struck out three to bring his strikeout total up to 41 in twenty-seven and one-third innings pitched on the summer.

Sophomore Tommy Doyle (Vienna, Va. / Virginia) started for Keene and took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. Doyle lasted four innings and gave up one earned run on five hits and no walks. He struck out six.
