Morris's Two-Run Triple Downs Dragons

Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - After failing to score for 20-straight innings in the series against Dayton, the Clinton offense ignited for seven runs over the sixth and seventh innings including two on a go-ahead RBI triple by Tim Morris as the LumberKings defeated the Dragons 7-4 on Thursday night at Alliant Energy Field. Morris finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and Kevin Rivers went 2-for-3 with three RBI to help the Kings win their third-straight series.

Left-hander Edlando Seco served up a first-inning solo home run to Dominic D'Anna, walked three-straight batters and allowed a sacrifice fly to Jefri Sierra in the second inning and gave up an unearned run as Anthony Phillips committed a fielding error scoring Devin Lohman for a 3-0 Dragons' advantage in the third. Seco did not allow another run afterwards, exiting after 5.1 innings.

The LumberKings couldn't score over the first 5.0 innings against Dragons' right-hander Daniel Corcino, but finally cracked the scoreboard in the sixth. Morris and Kalian Sams each reached on one-out singles and both scored as Rivers lined an opposite-field double down the left-field line. Corcino exited afterwards having yielded two runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings.

Dayton right-hander Daniel Wolford stranded Rivers at third base in that sixth inning but suffered a meltdown in the seventh. Matt Browning led off with a double down the left-field line and scored as Phillips pushed a bunt back to the mound. Wolford attempted to throw out Browning at third, but his wide throw ended up in the Clinton bullpen, scoring the run for a 3-3 tie.

Mickey Wiswall then singled, putting two on base for Morris. He ripped the first pitch he saw from left-hander Blaine Howell to deep right-center, and right-fielder Yorman Rodriguez reached out but could not make the catch on the run. Both Phillips and Wiswall scored as the ball dropped to the warning track.

Rivers then executed a safety squeeze bunt to get Morris home from third base. Kalian Sams, who was earlier intentionally walked by Howell, scored as Steven Baron's chopper to short was fielded by Billy Hamilton. Hamilton threw to third as Sams over-rounded the bag, but third-baseman David Vidal's throw home on Sams hit him in the back, allowing him to score standing up. That was the last of the five runs scored by the LumberKings in the inning as they pushed the lead to 7-3.

Right-hander Jonathan Arias (W, 2-2) cruised through 2.2 scoreless innings striking out five to run his scoreless streak to 14.2 innings and right-hander Tyler Burgoon worked past a run on three-straight hits to finish the ninth. Facing the tying run in the form of pinch-hitter Donald Lutz, Burgoon struck him out looking at a 3-2 pitch on the outside corner.

The LumberKings have now won three-straight series for the first time this year, having swept Fort Wayne on the road (5/31 to 6/2), taken two of three at Lake County (6/3 to 6/5) and won two of three against Dayton (6/7 to 6/9). Clinton has won seven of their last nine games after starting the year 14-38.

The LumberKings (21-40) continue the homestand as they welcome the Bowling Green Hot Rods (32-28) to town for the first time ever. Game one of the three-game set begins tomorrow night at 7:00 PM at Alliant Energy Field and features Clinton left-hander James Paxton (2-2, 2.11) taking on Hot Rods' right-hander George Jensen (4-2, 5.04).
